06 g6. 90,000 km. Clunk in front end. tech thought it was sway bar links. now says they are ok but the clunk is coming from steering rack . apparently rack has play in it where inner tie rods connect. does this happen or is it a snow job ??

Yes, inner tie rods can have play in them, don't see it too much on the G6, but possible. Usually outer tie rods, or ball joints though. Those sway bar links can get worn and noisy also.

apparently they removed inner tie rods thinking that was the problem but now say noise is from rack itself where rods go into rack . is this probable/possible. Do you think noise is more likely from intermediate steering shaft ?
Thanks Muff

Tech wants to replace rack. This is an independent shop. Thinking might be a good idea to go back to Gm dealer on this one seeing as how this guy has not done a rack on any g6`s yet.

Good idea going to the GM shop, they will probably recognize your noise right away. The G6 can make lots of different noises, once you've heard them, you know what they are.

Have replaced many, many G6 racks for this noise......but you have to be sure it's not the intermdiate shaft(TSB's all over the place for this noise).....

i just had my g6 at the gm dealer ship. to check the very same thing and that is the samething that they said. that it was the intermdiate shaft that was making the noise. but it was not that important to change at this time. but i would get check out anyways.
