Heater fan is intermittent on my 87 cabrio

my fan will come on then slowly die and stop. I'll hit a bump and it will start again for a few minutes then hit another bump and it goes off. Where is the fan located? How do i get to it? Is there a simple fix for this or is it a common problem?
