2005 Cavalier Spraying Gas

At intake... and possibly return?

Been smelling gas in the car while driving for a while now. Kind of intermittent, sometimes not at all and sometime really strong. Sometimes gas smell comes from engine after car has been turned off. Sometimes when it idles and sometimes when the car is in motion. Had a couple crackhead mechanics look at it and $10 later they swore it was fixed. It wasn't, but I didn't have time to deal with it and the car hasn't had any problems running.

Now I'm on break from school so I have some time to put into working on the car. So yesterday I had the hood up and found that gas is spraying from where the fuel line goes into the fuel rail, and I couldn't tell for sure but it looked like it might also be coming out where the return line connects.

I have done in-line repairs before, but I don't know much about fuel systems so I'm not sure whether I just need to fix where the lines connect or if there's some part inside that may need to be replaced.

i believe they make a "nut kit" that will fix that. check with your local parts store. you'll want to bleed the pressure off before hand.

Sounds like o-rings....

I checked at the parts store for a "nut kit", but the guy didn't have a clue what that was and I wasn't sure either, so I asked for o-rings instead. He gave me upper and lower fuel injector o-ring sets. I wasn't sure if that was what I was supposed to get but that's all he offered so I took them anyway. After replacing both sets and cleaning up the injectors the car is running much better and I can no longer see the leak, but there is still a gas smell coming from the engine while it is running and for a while after it is turned off, so I'm pretty sure it is still leaking.

Do I still need a nut kit? And if so, what exactly is that? Or if I just need o-rings for the lines does anyone know what size they need to be?

sorry, i was thinking of my blazer when i mentioned the nut kit. i believe the cav/sunfire just has the o-rings.

something you can do that is free, hit up the parts dept at your local dealership and ask them to print out the exploded view/diagram of the fuel lines. it will show every part on there.
