96 Ranger timing problem

I put a new timing belt on my 96 Ranger (2.3L) tried to be careful but the timing must have jumped a tooth or two. The truck runs but very rough. One of my problems is locating TDC, I stick my finger down over the hole for plug #1 but can't feel air pressure as the piston comes up on the compression stroke. I made sure the detent marks on the valve and dist gears were lined up with the indicator marks on the inside of the timing belt cover, but I'm still not doing something right. Anybody have a 96 with a 2.3 and familiar with doing this?
