orange peel problem

I've painted my 71 charger this afternoon. The primer went on, no problems there(except I somehow chose the EXACT same colour as the body, so applying was difficult)then on went the orange automotive paint(I bought it a while ago before I came here, I didn't know of tamiya) and it got orange peel on most of it. I remembered reading it was meant to look like that, but after another coat it looks like it's there to stay. should I try and sand it smooth or rub it out after I clearcoat and compound? can anyone give me some advice on the subject?

PS: look out for a full progress report on the car once the body problem is solved ;)

Sand it down before you apply compound, once thats smoothed up clearcoat and cut again...

so, I should do the following then?

1. 3rd coat of orange
2. clearcoat
3. sand down to smooth body
4. clear again and then compound
5. car wax

is this right?

I personaly would put on another coat of paint, wait a week, then wetsand it with 2000 grit, compound then wax. If you do it right, you wont need clear coat.

Put another coat or 2, dont' want to rub through that paint.

Sand the whole body down with maybe 2000, I use 3m 2000.

The after the whole things sanded polish out the whole thing.
It will probably be really shiny and you might not need to clear coat.

I have to put decals on the car(one wraps around the back and there are some hemi logos for the front) should I clearcoat to help protect them? thanks for the advice, you've been most triumphant. :cool:

Depending on how thick the coats have gone on you may have to strip it off and start over.
If you add more paint there is a great chance you will fill up panel lines etc and loose detail.
Being new to the hobbie....i say you ditch the automotive paint and get something like tamiya so you can learn the basic's first.

Is it me or... Those Tamiya problems happenned with the arrival of the new mini-acrylics ??? This paint is not the same as the one in the Acrylic bottle... well I tough so at first but I have so much problems with it that it can't be the same !? The orange peel effect is very "in your face" and don't stand the comparaison with the older paint I did with Tamiya Acrylics. Plus the coverage is deficient in comparaison... am I the only one who think that or is it just me being dummer by the minutes??

For your paint my friend, I'd make a few more passes with colors with a little more pressure to see if it's better... if not, sand a lot, compound, X22 and wax if nessary but all this is exausting... give me my old Tamiya back !
