It's pretty simple, it's just a LCD (liquid crystal display) like the original digital watches. If you notice the blocks have been glued to the dial over the display so that the lines still light up but the field between them is decorated with a block. Each of the two blocks mounted vertically will show the any number combination by lighting the outline of the blocks. A better pic is here where the test pattern is all eights:
