Lower Intake Manifold Replacement?

Hi

I just took my 2001 Grand Prix GT 3.8 into my local Pontiac dealership for an oil change and they said I need to replace my lower intake. How can I verify that they are telling the truth? Wouldn't I be leaking antifreeze or notice antifreeze in the oil? I really didn't not pay too much attention to the service writer because right out of the gate he mentioned $1200 to replace the lower and upper gaskets.

Thx

If you like, I can follow up with your dealership for you. Please private message me with more information (your name and contact information, last 8 of your VIN, and involved dealership).

Is it leaking oil or coolant? A good flashlight and a inspection mirror and you can check it yourself.

I don't consider dirt sticking to residue over 12 years a leak.......wash down the upper plenum, lower intake areas, and then recheck in a couple of days.....

The way I monitor my coolant (with the idea the lower intake job is impending after 208k) is this...parked level and with a completely cooled car (like not run since the day previous, parked overnight) I open the radiator and note the coolant level as well as that in the overflow bottle. If the engine is consuming it, it will be noticeable in my opinion. Also you could do your own oil change and note the color of the oil - both of the above are within the realm of DIY and considerably cheaper without exotic tools or methods.

Forgot to mention...lower intake gaskets on a 3.8 for $1200? He's nuts!

I took the car to my local mechanic and he noticed a small leak. He said it wasn't urgent but recommended to change the lower and upper intake soon. I'm getting the work done with a fel-pro lower and a AC Delco upper. Total price $700 out the door. Sure beats $1200 + taxes. Thank you everyone for your help.

i don't know guys, is it me?

Price for gaskets, thermostat, plastic coolant elbow, and gal coolant......

What's the labor time for lower intake gaskets?

Even $700 seems high?
