'95 w/ NP233 transfer case

My transfer case will shift between 2hi and 4low, but not 4hi.
The shop manual troubleshooting sections says to replace the encoder motor.

Is there any way to fix the old motor?

No idea but if you need to replace for that old of a car I would get one from a junk yard. They are not cheap.

I have all the bolts out of the encoder motor, but can't get it out without removing the front drive shaft. I removed the four bolts from the yoke(?) at the front axle input shaft. How do I remove the drive shaft? Do I need to compress it somehow?

Thanks in advance.

With the bolts from the clamps removed, get a good grip on the shaft and push/slide it back towards the transfer case. Twisting/turning the shaft as you push it back helps. Once it moves back, you can drop it down from the yoke carrier, then pull it forward out of the transfer case.

And when you do that grease will ooze out fair warning!! :)

Thanks for the info.

The transfer case wouldn't shift into low range any more. It turns out the contacts for 4Lo in the pushbutton switch were mangled and constantly touching. I separated the contacts and voila - normal transfer case operation!!!!
