Just reading this British article on America (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2003/05/31/wmom31.xml&sSheet=/news/2003/05/31/ixworld.html),I was motivated to examine my relationship with the police force of this country.Having never been a direct victim of crime, and not knowing anybody who has been a victim of violent crime,it is very hard for me to guage whether or not the police are doing an adequate job in this country.Since they have played a part in deterring all attacks against me and my property for the last 20 years or so,I can only conclude that they are effective, but I'd be interested to see how you view the law enforcement community and why.(try to see things in the wider perspective of crime, traffic cops are,and always will be,the lowest form of law enforcement)

I know quite a few cops; they do the best job they can under the circumstances. 110%, and then some.

Then again, as a wannabe cop, Im a bit biased :D

nice of the telegraph to talk crap about someone else's country

they neglect the fact that the UK's Police force won't follow up a crime unless there is a lot of either A) Evidence to begin with B) Public attention otherwise they just don't care or ever care to bother.

I hardly ever see a Police Car where i live but when i go up to my university which is next to the Moulsecomb estate (very rough area with alot of thugs) i see 3-5 ever time i'm up there.

How precisely are they 'talking crap'?When were you last in the States to see any evidence to the contrary?

Seems to me to be a fairly innocuous and well-written piece, why are some Americans so touchy about journalists from other countries failing to praise the American Way to the skies?

Interesting that you refer to the Moulsecomb estate as "very rough area with a lot of thugs" .From what my mother tells me,the area has much improved over the last few years. She worked at the senior school there until recently,so I'm pretty certain she knows what she is talking about.Perhaps it's because there's a strong police presence up there, perhaps not.I might research it a bit more next time I talk to her.

Clearly,if increasing numbers of houswives in the U.S. are arming themselves, there must be a general falling off of confidence in the police ability to carry arms on their behalf.Where's your problem with that?

T, what American is being touchy to the article? You did notice that NSX-R-SSJ20K location is Brighton, England didn't you?

Aside from that, I see police forces as being full of ineptitude and cronyism. Perhaps the investigative arms have a much higher quality of people, but the beat cops are full of assholes.

It’s a fallacy that police prevent crimes. Oh, they might be around and deter someone from time to time, but the police are there after the crime has been committed to do the paper work or possibly arrest someone after the investigative arm has done its work. And yes, it can be dangerous for them at times when arresting someone belligerent. However, having police around does not stop thieves, murderers, rapists etc. just by existing. I sleep much better at night knowing my 45 (among others) is much more accessible and ready to defend then any cop.

Why are some non-Americans so adamant on posting articles, written by journalists from other countries, that don't give the American Way any praise whatsoever?

Seems to be a decent article though. Police are in it for themselves and their pocketbooks. Buy a gun, kill a rapist, make the world a better place.

What leads you to believe the 'American way' deserves praise all the time?

I grew up in South Africa and make no secret of it, but it does not mean I have to defend the country at every turn.

Why do Americans feel they have to defend their country even when what it is doing is wrong?

What's to praise?.The U.S. has undisputably the highest percentage of gun deaths in the civilised world. If the average 'soccer mom' feels that the police are so ineffective that she needs to carry a handgun, what kind of free world is she living in?

Feel free to absorb the implications a little instead of going on a xenophobic rant every time someone makes an obsevation on the state of the world.....

On that post, taranaki, it seems you were jumping the gun a bit when you were calling American's touchy. No americans posted before that. Just felt like we (americans) were being set up.

I haven't read all of your posts taranaki. I wish I had the time to do so, because most of them are highly enlightening. It seems, however, that most of the ones I have read in this forum have been written by European news agencies about the fallacies in the American way of life. I wont get into opinion/fact/biased news because that's been mulled over 1000 times before. It's not just American media that is this way though.

I know you aren't anti-american, so don't go waving that stick in my face please. I didn't say the American way needed to be praised all the time, so don't wave that one either. I just wouldn't mind seeing some posts about new zealand culture, or anything else from that part of the world. Everyone already seems to have the idea that America is a cesspool of shit. We do tend to do some things right occasionally.

I'm just asking naki not to limit his posts to fanning the flames of dissented opinions about the American way. Not telling, asking.. it still is a "free" website.

Taranaki, I feel like I am debating with the best of them when I am debating with you, so please don't take this as an insult. It's more of a suggestion. Thanks for taking this into consideration, you always do.
