2005 Malibu classic overheating

engine light came on then car started to overheat. I turned the heat on to keep temp down. Computer read a small emissions leak and my muffler is rusting and has a small crack. when it begins to overheat the car idles strange like its low on gas. Any ideas?

What is the code?
Check the coolant level when the engine is cold....check the radiator and the reservoir.....

fluids were the first thing i checked reservoir is good, not sure what to do to check the radiator. I hope the temp is just from the theremometer

Is your cooling fan working? Not talking about your blower motor.....
Could be a thermostat....have not seen head problems on these engines...
