does taking off your cat and running open header help performance any or make your car any faster? i think it just makes your car a lot more louder. well thanks for the input.

it helps choke. like i was reading this scc issue and they were talking about runnin a open header with a jg edelbrock b racing pipe or whatever it was. and it made lots of hp compared to a full exhaust set up

how do you do this? you just take out the two bolts holding the end of the header to the rest of the exhaust?

yes an open header is just that, having only the header in the exhuast setup, its not legal at all, and you'll prolly lose power in a slightly modded engine, usually only hardcore tuned race cars run a setup like this, our little 4 bangers need the pressure to run correctly.

I agree with you 100%.

for maximum high rpm power, open header is good. for street drivability, it is just loud and obnoxious.
I've seen picutres of d series "race exhausts" on trailer queens and they basically consist of Header welded directly onto a 12" glasspack welded directly onto a turndown.
I think some race tracks have a db limit, so thats why they use the glasspack.

you can buy exhaust cutouts at places like jegs and stuff, and there are electric ones that open and close with the push of a button. My buddy was changing out some exhaust gaskets on his 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner (whic has a 440 in it by the way), and recorded it with open headers, sounds like a freakin monster....

my freind just took the exhaust off of his corolla gts. And he only took it off right after the cat. I could hear his car from my house 3 blocks away when he revved it. and they rev about the same amount as civics so you better watch for cops if you roll it like that
