Major Oil Leak!

I'm new to the forum and haven't been able to find my problem on here. My mom has a 97 blazer that's previously had issues with the oil pressure gauge moving from normal pressure to zero while she's driving. It's done this for the entire 1.5 years she's had it.That's not the issue, but i figured it could be related. Now yesterday she went to work and it leaked 3 quarts of oil throughout the day (she drives while working).

She said she got home and filled it up again (not sure why since it's leaking) and put all of her stuff in her other truck. When she got home today, she said it leaked almost exactly 1 quart of oil, and that's all it leaked per time throughout the day before. I'm not sure where it's coming from (I'm at school right now) but she said it covered the back of the blazer when she got home. She's about 15-20 miles from a carwash and nervous about driving it that far to see where it's leaking.

So it seems that it leaks a certain amount of oil and then stops. I'm hoping to figure out what it could possibly be to give my mom an idea of where to search for a leak. Any help would be appreciated!

I would guess either an oil sending unit or oil cooler lines. With a leak that bad it would be something thats under pressure. The blazers are bad about cooler lines.

I agree with Gmtech1.....could be either one.....since it's leaking so bad, should be easy to find......

If you are lucky, it's the oil sender...

If you look under the engine you should see two oil cooler lines on the driver's side that go from the rear of the engine to the radiator. About half way in this length of tubing, you should see rubber lines crimped to the aluminum tubes. That is notoriously where the damn things leak.

Some of these models have a total of 4 lines while others have 2 lines. The parts stores will refer to these as upper and lower lines. If you have 4 lines, you will have a junction block up around the radiator the the two lines from the back of the engine will connect to this block. These are the lower lines. The upper lines go from this block to the Radiator.

If the lines go from the back of the engine to the Radiator without stopping, you only have two lines.

In Any Case if you determine that the oil Cooler lines are leaking, which should be pretty easy if you look for oil at the crimp fitting, the best place to get new Oil lines is WWW.RockAuto.com (http://www.RockAuto.com) The best brand name to buy is the Dorman's Brand. These are better than the OEM lines and are very affordable.

Hope this helps.

I'd be looking to take it to a mechanic instead of looking for a car wash! One of these days its gonna shut off for the last time!

There are a few things to check for leaks such as oil cooler lines, front timing cover/front crank seal, crank position sensor, rear main seal, oil pan gasket, lower intake gaskets, and oil pressure sensor on rear of the engine. Have any of these items been changed previously? I would agree with gmtech1 that the oil lines or pressure sensor (pressurized items) would be a good place to start.
