I just bought a 2005 Avalanche with 95K miles on it. I have a slight knock/vibration in the column when turning tight a very low speeds. I have a fried that told me he heard about some "serious" problem with the columns on some of the Chevs in the 2003-2006 year range. has anyone had this problem before or heard of a serious problem with these???

No "serious" problems. Steering intermediate shaft noise(if thats what you have)is just annoying, not dangerous. You can replace it or lube it. There is a post on here somewhere about installing a grease zerk into the shaft.
Also, if you disconnect the the shaft from the lower shaft, the one that goes to the gear, you can slide the (i'm trying to make this a clean as possible) upper shaft in and out towards the steering column several times to re-distribute the grease inside the shaft. This will stop the noise for a while, but not a permanent fix.
