I got beat by a Dodge Daytona

I was sitting at a red light when this guy in a Daytona pulls up next to me and starts revving. So when the light turned green we both took off but he started pulling away from me, which was surprising because I thought I would be the one pulling away. I don't know if his car was stock or not. Does anyone know how fast Daytonas are, I know absolutely nothing about that car. I have seen them around on the street but I didn't think they were fast.

There are several models of Daytonas out there that can be considered 'fast' - in particular anything with an R/T badge on it could be considered quick. As you didn't state an era or year-range of the Daytona you were up against it's hard to really tell you exactly what you might have been up against.
In the newer style Daytonas, Dodge had arranged a pretty solid 4-cyl with ~220hp stock in the IROC R/T model. It's quite quick but I always had a little trouble hooking up at the line even with the front wheel drive. We're talking early 90's type Daytona there, as an FYI. Go to yahoo.com and do a search for '1992 Dodge Daytona IROC R/T' and that should give you pictures to see if it looked like what you were up against.

Comes to mind as one of the links I had in my list when I had my R/T.

I found this picture on the internet. The car looked identical to this except it was blue:

I'm gonna go and do a search about Daytonas to find out a bit more about them.

Looks like you were taken by a turbo Daytona. It could have been one of three different cars.

Daytona Iroc R/T:

Engine: 2.2L I4 DOHC Lotus head.
Turbo: Intercooled Garrett T03.
HP: 224
TQ: 218
Transmission: Getgag (A-568) forged five speed manual.

Daytona Turbo Z:

Engine: 2.2L I4 SOHC.
Turbo: Intercooled Garrett T03 @ 13PSI.
HP: 174
TQ: 200
Transmission: Getrag (A-555) forged five speed manual.

Engine: 2.5L I4 SOHC.
Turbo: Non-intercooled Garrett T03 @ 6PSI.
HP: 150
TQ: 210
Transmission: Three speed automatic or five speed manual.

I would bet that it is is that it was one of the 2.2L engines. Both were great but the one with the Lotus head liked to snap timing belts. Also I tend to think that Chrysler underrated the turbo cars for insurance reasons, much like they have with the SRT-4.

Looks like a V6 model, 3.0 ltr if memory serves correctly. I've never owned one of those so I'm not as familiar with that one - but I'm sure they can be beefed up as well. I always considered the Daytona to be an extremely under-rated car with a really, really bad rep from previous models. IMHO they got better as the model years went up and they were cancelled in the prime of their life. Of course, everybody knows that the Stratus is oh-so-more performance, right? ;) (No offense to Stratus owners intended - I'm just bitter that they cancelled my Daytona in favor of it.)

Seriously though, if you're curious there are a ton of resources around about these cars, but you will want to concentrate your searching to the 89-ish+ model years as anything earlier has little bearing on your investigation. Be sure to check out the IROC R/T model if you stumble across it though - they are very, very fast. Of course, they are quite rare as well. I still kick myself for selling mine! Grrr..

I don't think it was an R/T because I did some reading and only 250 of thsoe were made, so the chances of running into one is next to nothing.

I own one of those few and far between IROC R/T's. I have been clocked in excess of 170, although the manufacturer only bosts speeds of 149. As far as I have seen it is one of the fastest cars I've ever seen built by Detroit for the street. I regularly blow vettes off the road as I shift to fifth gear. Hope to see you at the light sometime.

So what year and on what trim levels was the 2.2L intercooled SOHC offered? I assume the 2.2L intercooled DOHC was only on the limited run IROC R/T from 92-93?

I really doubt it, unless his car wasn't turbo. Stock N/A Talon should only be running mid 16's.

The 3.0 SOHC V6 isn't all that gutless with a few bolt ons. :sunglasse

I own a 93 Dodge Daytona Iroc. It is completely stock other than having a diff intake system due to the box choke the engine. I've had it for about a year and a half and it has 213000 miles on it. It has an oil burn to it but it still gets up and goes like its brand new. I've lined up with quite a few cars and i think the only thing that beat me was a 5.0 mustang, other than that my Daytona passes or keeps up very easily. I can't wait to see what it does after we rebuild the engine for the first time.
