We are in need of a new (to us) car ASAP.
My requirements:
Good gas mileage (commute is 200km each day)
Good for fairly severe winter driving
Hopefully under $20,000
4 door with comfortable seating for 2 adults, 2 younger kids
Wish list:
Leather interior
Sportier look
AWD would be nice, but not essential
Reliable and affordable to repair
Shortlist so far:
2008 Audi A4 quatro 2.0T (touch over $20K)
2008 Mercedes C class (230 or 280)
2008 BMW 3 series
VW TDI was on the list, but my wife has something against VW, so I guess it's out.
Any comments or experiences with my shortlist, or is there something else we should looking at?

I know your area quite well I visit once every summer mennonite flea markets in your area, and yes winters can be quite severe and an AWD would be perfect.
You got good taste - Audi - Beamer - Mercedes, 2008 models, these vehicle's will most likely be lease returns, these cars can be quite expensive to repair and may be about to or have run out of full Mfg warranty which leaves you with a P/T warranty only.
With a budget of around 20G test drive a Grand Vitara AWD it's perfect for your type winters and you will have an excellent warranty included,,, suzuki to me is the best value on the market with a budget, interior a little tight but with 2 younger kids perfect.

Thanks Ray for your advice. We have been working our way through the process and have now shortlisted to all-wheel drives and considering the amount of miles I put on the car we believe a new one is the way to go.
Buying a 4 year old used would put us out of warranty usually within a month or so, and I'd have a car payment on a car pushing 200kms.
We are taking a 2011 Subaru Impreza limited out for a drive tomorrow. We'll see what we can negotiate for pricing as the 2012's come out in November. The problem is there seems to only be 1-2 of these limited ones left in the Toronto area so I'm not sure how much if a rush the dealership is in selling it.
AWD will be the common factor in whatever we buy.
