My ex is having a problem with her 94 grand prix gtp 2 door coupe. it has 163000 miles. The previous owner said the transmission had been rebuilt but just yesturday this issue came up.
She took her car for a spin around the block and when she came back she was unable to put her vehicle into park, 2, or 1 on the floor column shifter. She has these gears on the column P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1. As of right now her transmission fluid is good.
I've talked to a few people and some said transmission, but others also said the brake switch safety, or the linkage broke for the gears P,2,1 or out of alignment.
I guess im just trying to see what route to go to get the car fixed and how.

Well, easiest thing to check is the transmission and cable......
With e-brake applied, and engine off, pop the cable off the lever to the tranny.....now manually rotate the lever through all the gears.....if you can't shift through ALL the gears, then it's the tranny(usually the manual valve inside)......
If it's not the tranny, with key on(don't start), apply brake, and move shifter through all the gears....there is no resistance with it disconnected, should move like butter....if it doesn't, then cable or shifter problem.....
If it does move easily, reconnect end of cable....now watch cable as someone moves shifter.....it may be broken and flexes....
P.S. Nice that you and the "ex" get along, still.....

when it comes to this kinda thing I'm not familiar with location of things. I'm more engine and electrical kind of guy. Can you be more detailed in location, size, ect.
Was with the ex for 5 years, and its hard to let some people go that you still had fun with.

so we took off the floor console trim and played with the wires from the inside and got it to roll into park took it for about a 20 minute drive going from city, to highway ect and got home and it still goes into park and gear 2, 1. So hopefully it was just the wires getting in the way or that plastic slide from the lever that jammed up preventing the gear change. Thanks for the reply
