A book I purchased today
Drawing Realistic Textures in Pencil.
I think this book would be helpfull for rendering cars.
Remember check it out first before you buy it.
This book is not a absolute beginers book. It assumes you can do acurate line drawings already.
Just so you know the people at amazon.com all gave it 5 stars.

If you want to see some amazing stuff that makes my graphite car look like a coloring book work check this out.
It is not a car but if the person can do that with a portrait for sure they can do a car and make it look like a black and white photo.

That is not a photo.
I am still amazed everytime I see it.
That artist has graphite mastery, no it's wizardry. :)

tite, i just picked up thom's book today.. its very general... why cant somone just make a book that lays out every single technique, step by step.. like shading rims, panels, windows, colouring them and so on.. why do they have to beat around the bush? i dont understand
anyways i tried a few drawings from the book and even if i trace the frikkin drawings they still dont look as good, it just doesnt make any sense to me, its like anything i touch instantly becomes crap

That is great ghostchild316, some folks are more natural at it.
Jeff, don't give up, holmz. It takes time. Try to focus on taking your time perhaps focus on one medium like, graphite. Just do graphite drawings for like a year and then watch your improvement. I should have mentioned that there is no rush to start color. Remember I just started color back in November 2002. Don't wait as long as I did though :)
Heck some folks only do graphite and nothing else.
