I just bought a used 1996 Lasabre. There is a small leak from oil pan. What will repair likely cost?

If you have a shop preform the work, the cost shouldl be close to $200.00 The gasket cost is only $28.79, if you choose to buy it @ RockAuto Parts Catalog (http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php) FEL-PRO Part # OS30767R & have it installed. Paying only labor for 1-hr, you might save some $. BTW, anyone who claims the job is more than 1-hr, is pulling you leg.

100%agree... The oil pan gasket/windage tray is a simple replacement on this engine...

As I stated in another post, you have to "seal" that new plastic gasket due to "ripples" in the flange of the the oil pan....

Never heard that one before... The Fel-Pro gasket is an updated version to hlep correct for those problems... But what has to have sealer added is the points where the rear cover and front cover meet the block, if those are not as clean as they can be and sealed the gasket will leak...
I don't seal the oil pan gasket, but I do agree that a bead all around will prevent leaks..

There is a TSB for this.......first time I ran into this, just replaced the plastic gasket, and it still leaked.....because of the "ripple" in the pan flange, I ordered a new one....new one had the same ripple.....called TAC, and they said the TSB would come out soon about RTV'ing the new gasket, due to the ripple effect of the flange.....

Never use silicone anywhere on the "new improved" Fel-Pro Perma-Dry oil pan gasket! This particular gasket, which is much improved over OEM GM gasket, is probably not available to dealers, without outsourcing after-market parts, (which they usually refuse to do.) My shop has used this particular gasket many times, on (new & OEM oil pans) as a replacement, and have never had a return complaint for a leak. In fact, I replaced the oil pan & gasket on my own '96 PAU (some idiot bent it with a jack) last year using this same gasket, & it is still bone dry. GM needs to write a modified TSB recommending use of the "new design" Fel-Pro gasket”, but I doubt they ever will :headshake
