EEEk need some advice

Bought my 16 year old daughter a 1984 Mercury Maqrquis, A. Because it was two bucks, and B. I have two other kid drivers so no moohla for better car at the moment. When she is driving for distances longer than a couple miles, the car dies (seems like when brakes are applied) Battery is ok and just put a new alternator. any brilliant suggestions would be appreciated. Sounds like it could use a tune-up. Spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, etc.
