ticking in a 86 diesel

I have a 1986 gmc 6.2 diesel i have replaced the timing chain and gears as well as the ip and the injectors and all new fuel lines.i have started the engine no white or blue smoke the only smoke i have is when driving it and mash down on the pedal hard i only get a little black smoke.The only problem i am having is the engine sounds like a gas engine with ever valve ticking in it.you can only here the ticking when driving down the road not while it's idling.i have set the timing on the crank and cam as well as the ip like the haynes tech book calls for.can someone please tell me where to start looking for the ticking sound. :banghead:
