any clues appreciated

Noticed your problem as I had my 94 540i E34 clock/computer display went very dim yesterday. I would also like to know how to remove and replace without breaking anything, but doesn't look like anyone knows since there is no reply to your post after 14 months, Bugga.

Smee again, Just found a page that helps a bit with the clock removal. It also shows that mine is the OBC and yours sounds like just a clock. Anyway it might help.

these are pretty easy, pull out the radio [ open the
little 'flaps' on each side and back out the retainer
screws until they stop turning, then, sliding a finger into the cassette opening, pull the unit out of the dash]. leave it connected and to the side. now reach into the radio opening next to the OBC and near the back of the OBC, at the top you'll find it's release lever. pull it towards you until the OBC pops
out of the dash. replace all the bulb/sockets and reassemble........................................ ......jeffb.
