Good morning, I've a 2000 Monte Carlo, 3.4 engine with 107K miles. Engine light came on this morning. Got a code of P0440 which according to scan tool is a malfunction in EVAP system. Had same code nearly month ago and found a defective Purge valve canister. Replaced canister so what could be the problem now? Could the problem be the EVAP canister itself which I believe is located near the gas tank? Is it normal for the EVAP canister to go bad at 100K miles or so? Or could it be a fautly hose that's leaking? I check the gas cap as well but didn't noticed any problem with it. Has any of you experienced this with your monte and if so, how did you resolve it? Appreciate any and all assistance! The vehicle is running fine otherwise!

Anytime you get this code , first thing you should suspect is your gas cap ! If it's loose , defective , or damaged , it will trigger this code ! If there's any doubt about it's condition , replace it as they are relatively inexpensive and you can eliminate it from the list of possible problems .

FYI
I checked the gas cap; it looks fine from what I can see. However, I think I will replace it in the near future. I erase the DTC and since then the "Check Engine Light" hasn't came back on........at least not yet. I already replace the canister purge valve which had a cracked hose on it. Thanks!
