Right turn grind

I have searched for an answer for this in previous posts thru the search engine without success. I developed a new sound in the front end of my 1991 Lumina Euro 3.1. On a right hand turn I get a sound of grinding sheet metal. It only happens on a right hand turn and doesn't matter how little the wheel is turned the sound is there. I have been under both sides of the vehicle and had both wheels off looking for the source with no luck. The only recent thing that had been done to the car is a front end alignment and new front tires. Any assistance in this problem is appreciated.

could it be a cv joint

Does the car have to be rolling for it to do it or will it do it parked and turning ?? If it is only rolling, check the metal backing plate behind the rotor to be scraping the rotor. Also could be a hub bearing assy. If it does it parked, i'd also look at the spring, strut assy. and strut plate assy. on top of spring. Hope this helps.

Have run into this before and took forever to find. Check the starter, you may find the drive gear is loose and sliding out and hitting the flywheel on right turns. If this is the problem you'll need to replace the starter.

Wow...that's one of those bizarre ones for the books...I had a Dodge Caravan in the shop once, had a loud rumble in the front end above 40 mph...been to the dealer twice with no diagnosis.

At first I thought hub bearing or something like that, but it didn't react to steering one way or the other like usual. And sometimes it wasn't there at all...then would suddenly start doing it.

After driving it a while I realized the rumble coincided with the cycling of the A/C compressor...whenever it was on, the noise stopped, off, it began doing it. after checking the compressor pulley bearing and finding it seemed fine, only other answer was the radiator fan....

Motor bearing was cooked, but fan was still working. When on, the fan's thrust pulled the shaft forward, into a position where it ran quiet. When off, and windmilling in the moving air at speeds above 40 mph, it rumbled like hell, being pushed back into the bad spot on the bearing face...:grinyes:

I had the same exact thing happen to my brand new 91 Grand Prix. Secondary fan did that in Fla. on vacation. Went to dealer and they didn't have one. They had one shipped to Chatt. from Atl. and I had to drive all the way back to Chatt. with no air and get the part and fix it myself !! Said it would take a few days to put it on !! I took tools outa my trunk and had it on in parking lot in 5 min. So much for new car warranty !!:jerking:
