have you been living under a rock or something? jp :D
everyone who has a P10 or P11 want to do the swap. it comes with the gear box, the ecu has to be retuned by JWT. it fits good with your stock mounts. i suggest you pick up the DEC 01 issue of SCC. George did a write up of how to do the swap :D thanks George :toothless if you want a FMIC, you will have to fabricate piping or wait until Hotshot comes out with the kit. there are also a few things in the way, but other than that, its a pretty straightforward swap

First, you don't return the Bluebird ECU to JWT - you send in your stock ECU for reprogramming. Second, JWT usually doesn't ship overseas.

Might be hard in Chile. :)

Might not be tho there's a guy with an NX and another with a 240SX both rnuning DET's with the ECU that came with their DET engines...they were unlocked for 150$ too....Not just hearsay I sat in the NX DET and man it kicks ass. The 240 opened its hood to let me worship it :)
I'm not exactly sure how they did it tho but I'll know soon the next club meet is soon and I have my questions ready ;)

Hey George:
I just realized you're the guy who put together the P10 SR20DET swap in the SCC I just picked up. First off, thanks for doing so. I found the article very thorough and enlightening and now I want to get a DET in my G20. You didn't mention in the article how much it cost to hook up the Blackbird SSS engine from Japan through SOKEN Trading Co. I'm wondering if I have any hope of paying for an imported SR20DET on a student's budget. Thanks.
I'm also wondering how you make sure you get a good engine without a lot of miles on it. The engines must have come out of a car that was once on the road. It would be a real bummer if you went through all the trouble(and money) to import an engine and it started crapping out 6 months down the road.
Also are there any dependability issues associated with the engine. I've heard that though turbo engines are getting better, they are still associated with shorter engine life.
Alright I think that's enough for now. Thanks.

Luke (G22DET) can hook you up with an engine for around 2K. the engine will probably only have around 30,000 km or so. the engine will last AT LEAST 150,000 miles unless you run it to hell. :D

I have a bunch of copies and will be buying more, but I'm not parting with them. I have them for family who have requested them, sponsors (to send with a thank-you letter), a couple to cut out and frame, and the rest will go into storage.

Prices vary, but expect to pay between $1,300 and $1,700. It's best to shop around a bit, but less so for price and more so for condition. A really good condition engine is easily worth $1,700 and a so-so condition engine probably isn't worth your time for $1,300. The vast majority of DETs are pretty good engines and there have only been one or two duds that I know of people buying. One was a "bargain" special up-front. Not much of a bargain I think.
There are two major things to be concerned about when buying a DET. The first is the condition of the turbo. There shouldn't be any end play in the shaft. If there is any more than barely detectable (and I mean barely), then the turbo will likely need to be rebuilt. In my case, I had a friend in SoCal call me from Soken when he was helping another friend buy a JDM SR20DE. He told me the turbo was sweet. The engine wasn't quite as clean as I wanted but a sweet turbo trumps appearance any day. The second issue is to check the cams if you can. You don't want to see any wear or scortching (sp?) on the cams and absolutley no gunking.

See above for how to buy one. The JDM take-outs are mostly around 30-40k miles. It's due to the laws in Japan. Basically after so many years or miles, a car only has scrap value in Japan (after only about 3 years or 30k miles). It has to do with their inspection laws and the cost of keeping an older car is higher in many cases than just buying a new car. So they scrap them and we get slightly used engines here. :)

Don't sweat the dependablilty issue if you buy a decent engine, change the oil regularly (damn, I just realized I'm over due) and don't just shut it off after running hard (let it idle for a while). I used to be concerned about turbo engines, but much has changed in the last 20 years. I have little worries about them now.

well, jprimera, i have a DET motor in my P11 so if you have any concerns, let me know. The only thing tha'ts a bit difficult to do is the intercooler piping on the ABS controller side...it's a tough squeez but if you run both IC piping to the battery side (if you relocate the battery to the back) you should be able to fit the pipings in. You might also want to get a slimmer radiator fan because the turbo sits about an inch away from the factory fan..not too ideal for cooling. Other than these concerns, everything else is very straight forward..let me know if you have other questions though.
