manual, nothing better than going to 6500rpm, and dropping it into 2nd only to do it once more at 62MPH. Plus you can't beat the control you get with a manual, and the torque that my tranny can take, that an auto can't....

There´s nothing like a roaming 2 litre engine on 8000rpm, slam in second gear, and watching those supershitty BMW´s dissapearing in the rearview mirror.

u gotta drive the clutch, u cant have a machine do it for you. i can see if there is a hill up ahead and i will downshift if i need to. also, if i am going downhill i just let off my gas to maintain my speed (and watch everyone if front of me wear out their brakes). oh yeah, there is nothing like catching 2nd gear at 50mph!

Mine suggestion is get rent or borrow any car with 5 sp. for 3-5 days (better weekend) and drive around just for fun. Better if you have some experience with manual. Take test drive with automatic later and you'll see!!!

Depends on the application:
From a performance standpoint, you've got the track and you've got the strip. Manual tranny's definitely have the advantage on a road or curcuit course. On the dragstrip Automatics have the advantage because they are more consistant and can shift quicker.
From an everyday standpoint, you've got when you feel like having fun booting around and when you feel like shit from a long day's work and don't feel like clutching, shifting, not to mention juggling a cellpone, smoke, or drink along with that.
Also depends on the car:
A little four-banger is going to need a good Manual driver to be able to juice that tiny amount of torque for all its worth.
A V8 with over 300 ft/lb of torque is not going to care if you floor it and the Automatic transmission keeps it in gear, drop a gear, or drops two gears - its still going to RIP!
Based on everyone I know who drives a Manual, they wish it was an automatic more times that they're glad they got a stick.
AUTOMATIC it is! (bottom line: NOOOOOBODY can outshift a computer) :smoker:

apparently you have'nt been listening.... Standards have the ability to handle more torque, and if you can't drive a four banger with a standard transmission, you don't deserve to have the right to drive, for not haveing the hand eye coordination of a sloth. Automatics are just as sucky as you can get, sure its good if your drive stop and go everywhere, and you want to look like a wuss, not have the power, or efficiency that I get. I have a friend now who is blasting automatic transmissions now since the auto transmission in his 96 honda accord coupe went AWOL, he can only drive in reverse now... I told him that's what happens when you try to burnout in an automatic.. Automatics are boring, and I start to pass out after 6 hours of driving if I'm bored... manuals give you something to play with, and when you want to pass some asshole on the freeway at 75mph theres nothing better than dropping it into 3rd gear while you wait for the automatics to finally switch gears and put the O/D to work.. and while they're just getting to speed, I'm already long gone.. trust me on this..

First off, don't talk to me about torque boy - who are YOU to be preaching about torque to ME? - you drive a bloody Honda Accord!
And I don't know if YOU were the one not listening or having trouble reading, because I did in fact say it was better to get a Manual transmission in a gutless four-banger. As for Manuals being able to handle more TQ than Autos, maybe in your tiny puss-boy engine world - all I know is that my stock 4L60E 4-speed tranny could handle the torque from nearly THREE of your little Accords engines (and thats me being nice and asuming you at least got the V6 with 200 ft/lbs). Even for a FWD, my Old Man's 4-speed GTP with "Performance Shift" (Oooooo) has no problem laying down its 285 ft/lbs TQ to the pavement and would dust your Accord.
By the way, you ever hear of shift kits? cause theres one's out there that would literally run circles around that busy rod strokin' hand of yours - kits that will enable you to hold any gear for as long as you want, give you very aggressive downshifts and double downshifts in a split second the instant you give it more than a quarter throttle stab - and, as expected, outshift even the most experienced Manual driver time and time again.
Finally, don't be so righteous next time you post something like transmission preference - to say that everyone who drives auto is a "wuss" and doesn't deserve the right to drive "for not having the hand eye coordination of a sloth" is inconsiderate and ignorant. Thats like telling an 8 year old you can never drive because you don't know how to? Some people don't want to learn how to drive Manual, some already do and merely chose not to - some simply can't! What if you're disabled? Huh?? You believe disabled people who cannot drive Manual or even if they could would make their lives miserable, should they have their "right" to drive taken away? Who are you to say this person doesn't deserve to drive? - imagine me saying "Anyone who doesn't drive a V8 car or truck does not deserve the RIGHT to drive because they are laim turds." I would not only be insulting tons of people but would literally be taking millinos off people off the road because of my immature attidue.
Lucky I don't think like that, and even luckier I'm not the one who decides.

ok. in professional drag applications, automatic is more suited because its a completely different transmission and computer and horsepower range. for your TYPICAL DAILY DRIVER be it a 4 cylinder or a big fatty V8 (or V10 i dont care), you're going to get more performance out of a manual, unless you've modified the tranny somehow. aaand they last longer under more stress. aaand they're more versatile. i agree with the laziness - been there; but the manual tranny kept me awake on many a long road trip.

what kind of wrc are you watching??? trust me on this... they only use standard tranmissions.... the would be the reason for the shortshifter and the clutch in the car... if it was an auto it would'nt need a clutch... I don't think I've ever seen a WRC car with an automatic transmission.. Prove me wrong with some proof.
also DVS LT1 or whatever... I did'nt say everyone who drive an auto is a wuss, I said and I quote "if you can't drive a four banger with a standard transmission, you don't deserve to have the right to drive, for not having the hand eye coordination of a sloth." so I could have worded it a little better ( I think I acutally replied it to someone elses earlier post but whatever...), but let me rephrase it " If you cannot handle the shifting/clutching of a manual transmission nor know how to control a manual transmission you will not have the control over your car than you would without" sure I know there are people who can't drive sticks, my uncle is one of them (bad knees, he was a big rig driver). I have driven a lot of autos, and I hate them simply for the fact that I dont get the reactions that I want, plus I keep looking for the clutch. also there are limitations on the modifications you can do to the car because of the automatic transmission.. With an auto you have to buy all these separate components to bring it to what I already have.. there are limitations to stock automatic transmmisions. the main one is control... sure your v8 may be able to blast, but who gets more for their gas and still has more that it can pull out of it's small motor (with mods)... and yes the other 3 vehicles I have are autos simply for the fact that the GMC's shifting would be a bitch while hauling it's 15,000lbs towing capacity (we have a 32 ft trailer). and the other 2 are just daily drivers. but my accord is the envy of my sister and her automatic.
personally, I don't give a shit if your dads car can circle the world in 5 seconds. A car is a car. Nothing more, nothing less..
and believe me I have take off's down, and so what if I have a 4 cyl (150 HP)... Its better than the 10 year old 90 HP (or so) mercury tracer that I used to have..

This makes... a bit more sense buddy (but I know what you mean), and doesn't sound like you want to crucify anyone not driving a manual. Eh, I apologize for getting on your case - you read stuff in text and think this person could be screaming at you or just giving you a pointer.
Bye the way, I can drive standard as well, and I admit they are fun, but not when you don't want to have fun! I drive ALL the time between myself and my girl, cause on nights I pick her up in my car - I drive. On nights she comes over to pick me up - I DRIVE! Its always the same thing: Oh, baby my feet hurt from working all day, I'm tired, C'mon you can use the "practice"
I think my backhand could use a little practice sometimes . ;)
Edit: WRC - you guys talking about rally car racing?? Theres NO way they're running Auto's - and if the other guy is talking about clutchless shifting I wouldn't be surprised. All the Indy Cars and F1's use that now. Look at the all the passenger cars that have that shit now.

I have an automatic coupled to a B18B in my Integra, and yes, I was dissapointed when I first looked into the window of the car in the lot, but tough, I was just unlucky. I was in need of a car, and what else but an Integra? Nice looking, semi-sporty, that'll get me from point A-point B. Its not like there's a huge street racing scene in Lincoln, NE anyway right? Most cars are your average joe intake-exhaust 4 bangers with autos, just like mine, and I dont really care. I got over the fact that if I race I'll be a laugh, I just race for the fun of it, its not saying much to beat my car, or for me beating a slower car. But on the other hand, in my friend's 3000GT VR-4 6-speed, with AWD, that is a different story. I cant ride with him anymore because it puts me in a depression because my car is slow and an automatic and his isnt. Oh well, at least I can pretend to have an manual and shift it from 1-2-D3-D4  j/k, I don't do that daily driving because it would drop pretty quick, only when I'm racing becasue I can shift at redline instead of redline-1000 and it shifts a little harder, but it doesnt make that much of a difference. Simply put, autos are convenient, manuals are fun.

I don't think you know what you are seeing. Pro street/stock driver 98% of the time use a reverse manual valve body automatic. Meaning, an automatic that you shift manually. Only difference is no clutch, and they produce lightning fast shifts.

I kinda like the triptronic shifters.. and paddle shifters again make me think of fast and the furious, but maybe that's just me... paddleshifters on the wheel in a FWD car like a Subaru WRX, or puegeot 206 hatch would be awesome..
and the reason I say manuals are beeter is that autos (at least honda autos) lose about 20-24% efficiency.. which means you may have a 150 HP engine in the car, but only about 114-120HP to the wheels... while a manual tranny gets about 15% efficiency.. 122.5 HP to the wheels.. and HP and torque go hand in hand.. so which is better? definitly manuals..

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought suburus sent power to all wheels if there was slippage (traction control?) otherwise they were 90% FWD and 10% RWD. Os in fact, it wouldn't be the same as a 4WD.

I believe the proportions for subaru's are something like 60% front wheel drive 40% rear wheel drive... the front gets more power for better control, and because of the weight distribution over the frame. I have 2 subaru's here... (98' legacy wagon, 99 forester (sports package))

Ok why do all the pro race car drivers have stick??? If auto is better?
Not all pro-drivers use stick. Drag racers use auto, the faster shifting of their autos outweighs the benefits of a manual (like they never need to downshift/slow down/take corners). Also, the fact that drag cars have stall converters set very high (how ever you say that) negates the benefit of a clutch.

they are nothing like tiptronic. Tiptronic is a glorified auto. If you want to go first gear going 60 in a paddle shifter, you can. In a tiptronic, you can't. They don't down shift when u want and they lag horribly on shifts.
Not all pro-drivers use stick. Drag racers use auto, the faster shifting of their autos outweighs the benefits of a manual (like they never need to downshift/slow down/take corners). Oh my god how is this a discussion.
1. Standard models as a general rule have higher top speeds and faster 1/4 mile times than their Automatic counterparts. When performance (not practicality) is concerned, standard is faster, especially in circuit racing.
2. FWD is inferior to RWD applications. When you launch your weight goes to the rear of the car and in a FWD car thats off the drive wheels, reducing traction. And in cornering you understeer while on throttle. The more power a FWD car has the worse its handling characteristics.
FWD Automatics are more economical, and practical for daily driving. But when performance comes to mind... NO!

If I was looking for a street car i would definately pick a manual, but if I was looking to bracket race I am Auto all the way. An auto is much more consistent on launches and doesnt miss a shift ( if it does, its bad ). Plus w/ an auto turbo car you can powerbrake and build boost on the line for better 60' times

Ok let's all be honest manual is the better way to drive. It gives you a higher level of control versus an automatic. Let's be honest I can train a monkey to press the gas pedal down hard when I say go. I don't know about anywhere else but if you see a guy driving a Vette with an automatic everyone sorta laughs at him...manual is it, no doubt about it
