1993 F350 Can't retrieve codes

I have a 93 F350 with the 460.
Ran great, then it sat for a month. Now it runs rough. There is a mouse home on top of the motor, which could be a clue. The check engine light is on. Tried to read codes by putting a jumper wire in the self test connector, but now nothing happens. The CEL is just steady on. I know I'm doing it right, I have gotten codes from this truck before (EGR).
Without being able to get codes from this thing, I feel blind. What the hell?
