IM NOT REAL FAMILIAR WITH CARS AND I JUST STARTED WORKING ON MY 94 Z28. I WAS FINDING MONEY FOR MAINTANCE ON THIS THING IS THRU THE ROOF.
I JUST GOT DONE CHANGING WIRES AND PLUGS AND THAT FIXED ALLOT OF MY PROBLEMS. NOW IM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY IDLE. SITTING AT A RED LIGHT THE DAMN CAR WANTS TO JUST GO, AND TRUST ME IT TRIED TO KILL ME A FEW TIMES. NOW I NAME THE CAR CHRISTINE.
SO BASICALLY THE CAR IS SURGING. THE IDLE HITS ABOUT 1K TO 1.5K. BACK AND FORTH THEN SETTLES DOWN????? THEN SURGES AGAIN AND IT MAKES ME LOOK LIKE, WELL YOU KNOW.
I DID CHANGE THE IDLE AIR CONTROL MODULE AND THAT DIDN'T HELP.
SO IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME I WOULD APPRECIATE IT.
THANKS FOR LISTENING.

I would to have more info to help you better, but I would suggest checking for a vacuum leak, and check the O2 sensor.

Coz,

Did you find out what the problem was? My 95 Z28 is doing exactly the same, idle hits about 1k to 1.5, back and forth then settles down???? then surges again.

Please let me know if you found a fix.

It may need a MAF sensor cleaning. Carburator spray or a good contact cleaner will do, but be careful when doing so, they are very delicate!

you might want to check your throttle setting screw. look in your throttlebody and there should be a slight gap between the main body and the butterflies, if there isnt then set the throttle setting screw a little deeper and this will allow air to flow smoothly through your throttle body. The boys at FastChip told me about that as i was having a similar problem.

You probably need an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) cyliniond (sp?). This will tend to make the car race, and then idle very low as almost want to cut off. I put one on my 94 Camaro and it ran about $175. Very simple to replace, but a little costly. Only held on by 2 bolts and it probably something you can do yourself. Take it off, crank the car up for just a couple of min. to allow and trash that feel down to blow back up and out. Then place the new one on top and tighten the two bolts back down.

My car's got about 155k miles on it and it's starting to do the same thing. I just replaced my wires and plugs in it, because it was mis-firing really bad. That took care of it, but now it's surging just like the other complaints here. I'm just curious is the Optispark distributor could be causing this also. Have any of you tried the other options that have been replied here? If so did they fix it? Let me know.

The funny thing is, my car started doing this about a year or so ago. But it's like a ghost, it'll do it couple times within a week, then it won't do it for almost 6 mo. My car actually shut off this time and the check engine light come on just before it shut off. But it fires back up like nothing ever happened. Also if you put the car in neutral (Mine's an auto), it doesn't seem to do it. I've also noticed a little surge in the rpm and motor when crusing around 2500-3000 rpm uphill or w/ a mild load.

Thanks.

Don't do this. Thoes wires are too delicate to be messed with like that.
