Metal Engraving

I had no idea where to put this, since it's kind of an odd question, as it has nothing to do with automobiles. My friends are building products with hardened metal parts (I have no idea what grade of steel is used) and want to engrave their company name, and location on to the parts (specifically firearm receivers). It has to be engraved deep enough, where your finger nail will catch the carved out part, and a 1/4" or less (likely less) tall.

But they want a relatively inexpensive way to do it, and to be able to reproduce the engravings easily. The only thing I could think of was having a template made, with the company name and location, and using an inexpensive engraver to trace the characters of the template. But I don't even know where a template could be purchased from.

If anyone has any ideas of an efficient ways to do this, or where you get such a template made, I would really appreciate any insight.

Not sure how handy they are... but a DIY engraver may be the best way to go
