painting my wheel wells

also with other things i'm thinking about and wondering if it would be a good idea to paint the inside of my wheel wells and maybe some other things under my truck that it probably couldn't hurt with some spray paint of some kind i'm kind of on a budget not looking to spend a lot of money but just to make it look better and slow any rust down ( there really isn't a lot of bad rust that is going through just light rust) what are your ideas on this thanks

I power washed mine down and went to NAPA and got some spray dipcoat. (rubber undercoating) and put a thick layer on my wheel wells all the way around. I think I have about $30 in undercoating in the wheel wells.

1. Consider punctuation.

2. How long is cheap paint going to last when the tires sand blast it with road grit?



Undercoating is heavy and somewhat expensive. Adhesion is something of a problem, although not a huge problem.

"I" would leave it the hell alone. When was the last time you saw a wheel well rust out? Drainage is excellent; they get surface rust but nearly never perforate.

I agree on the punctuation. It does make reading easier.

Don't laugh, but I power washed my wheel wells, then sprayed them with WD40 and wiped off the excess with a rag. They shine for a while and clean off much easier.

I use rusfre a mineral oil based under coating that is brushed on or you could thin this slightly and spray with a gun ....

this product works It does stop rust if you wire brush all the loose stuff..wipe down before application...all my under body / wheel wells thats metal has it and it lasts a long time....the only problem is you cannot paint over it..it is a very tar like material..excellant in the rust belt..

spray can undercoating is crap...EPA has banned the good stuff...most of the spray stuff is water based..pure crap....

When was the last time you saw a wheel well rust out? Drainage is excellent; they get surface rust but nearly never perforate.

Not to put a damper on this statement, but I've owned 4 of these trucks, an 88, a 93, a 96 and now a 92. Of those four, I could stick my hand through 2 of the beds wheel wells.

thanks for the input guys, and sorry for the puncuation it had been a very long day that day. anyway i got some stuff called rubberized undercoating, or undercarriage, or something like that and used it so far its holding up pretty well :)

I've used the same stuff from Duplicolor on my old '95 for the wheel wells and redid the frame rails. I had to apply primer first to bare metal, but the undercoating works well for the already painted wheel wells. A quick scuff with a scotchbrite pad and wipe down with a clean cloth will give the coating more to bite into and improve adhesion.
