92 Jetta won't start HELP!!

I have a 92 Jetta 1.8L Gas Auto. My starter needed to be replaced, so I did that (it was in a super fun spot too, right behind the engine). After replacing the starter, the car would turn over but would not catch and fire up. I then took it to a (non VW) mechanic who replaced the plugs said that it was either the ignition coil or the timing belt. I replaced the timing belt, made sure to line up all of the components (crankshaft, camshaft, intermediate, etc). Same problem: turns over but does not catch. I then replaced the ignition coil. Still wont start.I checked the fuel line and I'm getting gas up to the injectors. I am at the end of my rope and have no idea why my car wont start. Any help or advice would be really appreciated
