95 5.7 Sierra high amp meter

I have a 95 Sierra 5.7 with 125k
Occasionally when driving the air bag light and battery light flash and the headlights flicker. The amp meter guage reads to the high or in the red and then after awhile returns to normal and the truck runs fine. Last year I put in a new alternator and I went back and got that and the battery checked and they seemed fine? I am looking for reasons that the amp meter would read in high or in the red.
