I was going to change my axle on my 1996 cutlass supreme 102,000 3.1 engine. I spent a day trying to remove it with pry bars, slide hammers etc. It wouldn't budge.Note that this was a aftermarket cv axle i was trying to remove, not sure if that matters. Anyway

So i decided to take it to a shop , they took a very long time on the car and I wondered why, They didn't tell me that they couldn't get it out either. But i noticed once I got home and I see all the marks on the old part where the axle goes into the trans...(I'm not sure what the metal end is called)... They took another axle and basically attached it to older one....

Now should they have don't that, especially without telling me? probably not (that's why I like working on my own car)..could I have found someone else to get it out? That's something I don't know either.

The thing is My question would be if I have problems with the axle again or if I have problems with the bearing/shaft that goes into the trans ( the part they didn't remove). what can be done? Just keep taking it shops until someone can get it out...Does it have to be knocked out from the other side, or through the trans pan....??? just wishful thinking

it sounds like they left the inner cv joint in & replaced everything else or just did the outer cv joint.what did they say they did?? is the car fixed??
sometimes the inner joint can be a bitch to remove, but any good shop
will be able to replace it. what the problem was with the car & what was done to fix it was between you & the shop! check your reciept

It was making a loud clacking noise when i would switch gears. You could here it best when i was parallel parking, and you could hear it even better with the front driver wheel off when the car was off the ground.

I was told It was the axle by a few Mechanics. So I took it in to a shop once i had no luck getting it out, ...And yes your right they changed everything except the inner CV joint.. As of right now its not making that clacking noise. And I know they spent quite a while working on the car. I kinda have mixed feelings about it all. I hope its fixed and appreciate them working hard on it but they should have just told me hey "We can't get the old one out" or at least explained to me the situation.

Its just makes me wonder if the job they did shabby or not. Now I guess I have to take it to another shop to give it a look.

I paid with credit and have a receipt and I could always make a claim dispute if Need be.....
