Transmission Service Requirements

2006 LS V8 - 90k miles:

I am confused... I scheduled an appointment with the local Ford Dealer to change the oil and trans fluid. He asked which service I wanted, the "flush & fill" or "drop the pan, replace the filter and fill"? My reply was, what does Ford recommend. He didn't seem to know.

Which is the correct answer?

The general consensus seems to be that unless your transmission has been flushed regularly (like every 15-20kmiles), do flush it. Instead, drain the fluid, drop the pan, change the filter, and refill. Then put this on a 30-40k maintenance cycle.

This basic transmission was used in other higher production number Ford products and the trend seems to be with those that flushing one that hasn't had that done regularly since put in to service is asking for trouble. It seems to break contaminants loose that would have otherwise remained stationary.

Ford recommends a full fluid exchange every 150K miles for the transmission in the LS.
If you want to go all the way, do the exchange ("flush") then do the pan drop service and change out the filter. Just doing a pan drop would only change out a third or less of the transmission fluid.
