Just picked up an 04 xlt all wheel drive with 3.73 limited slip diff. The seller tells me that in reverse and turning the rear end will lock up (clunk) the limited slip and that this is normal. Every one who has one he knows does the same thing. Is this correct? Thanks

I had a 2004 Mountaineer V8 AWD with the 3.73 LSD, as well as a previous 2000 Mountaineer V8 with LSD, and neither made noise when backing or turning. I currently have a 2004 Aviator with AWD but I'm not sure if it has LSD. It doesn't clunk either.
I'd be checking the condition of the u-joints if it's definitely coming from the rear, as well as the parking brake shoe assemblies.

Thanks for the info. I haven't had the chance to check it out yet. I'm real slammed trying to finish up my house construction, but need to get on it soon, It only has 24000 miles on it. I also have a couple of other car projects to wrap up. Maybe this weekend I will get to the fluid changes and see if I can locate the noise. For now it's parked.

Definitely not normal.
I would be weary of driving it until you can check it our properly.
It maybe something simple, or it maybe the insides of the LSD have gone bad and are about to fail altogether.
