Definition of a girl car

I know this is a not a BMW-related topic, but since this is the forum I frequent the most, I thought I'd ask it here.

What is a girl car? (I'm a guy, by the way)

I've heard the Jetta and the Eclipse been called girl cars, but I can't quite figure out what the true definition of a girl car really is. I doubt that girls make of the bulk of car buyers for these and other "girl cars;" so what gives? In the case of the Eclipse, I think it's a girl car because it looks agressive and sporty and powerful, but is actually a pretty weak car. Is the Jetta girly because it is trendy among the teens?

Please share your ideas, I'd really like to know. Let's hope the 3 series doesn't become a gir car anytime soon.

The biggest girl car I can think of is the VW Cabrio. I almost always see young chicks driving those. I don't know what makes a girl car...I think if the car is 'cute' then it's a girl car.

Hmmm, Hopefully I dont get in trouble for this. :) Here are a few I think. Neons, newer VW bugs, Escort ZX2, Cabriolet, 4 door Focus', Echo. Hmmm, cant think of any others at the moment.

OT, have you ever noticed, that if there is a Roxy sticker on the car, it has been turned into a major chick car? :bloated:

Hehe...his car now has my old wheels and it looks way better than with the black wheels. I traded him my old ones for those and then had them recoated in silver..Here's a pic of mine with the old wheels:

Anything hip and trendy within the "teeny-bopper", Britney Spear's/Backdoor Boys listenin' genre... So yeah, I think the Jetta is definitely a chick car. It's more than that though. Like, you just get the feeling deep down in your gut when you look at it that it's girly.

Also any car that is underpowered that a girl would consider owning simply because it was "cute" (*shudder*) is a girl car.

The 3-series will never be a girl car unless the price suddenly drops 20K, loses 100hp, and comes in cutsey-color varieties on the exterior. Oh yeah, and comes stock with a cloth interior. My girlfriend complains incessantly about how leather is "uncomfortable in the summer".

I had a friend who told me that the Civic was chick car, but I never really agreed with him on that one.

As Jean Lindamood (now Jennings) editorialized about this subject in Automobile magazine a few years ago, her definition seems to be the best on the subject. She stated that a "chick car" was a sporty car without the muscle to back it up. Like a base Probe or a base Eclipse. Everybody agrees that the Volkwagen Cabriolet/Cabrio is the quintessential "chick car," but I like Ms. Lindamood's definition best.

I have made my car kinda girly, but since I AM a girl, I think it's only fitting. Heck, the only thing I've really done so far is to put in an american flag sticker on the rear window, my High School graduation tassle, and a new steering wheel cover!!!

I may have to get sheepskins for mine next summer :eek:..even with an Arctic A/C System™ the seats still get hotter than heck.

The hot chick im taking on a date owns a Camaro SS, 99 i think. Damn hot car....definly not a chick car, excpet that she doesnt drive it like a camaro deserves to be driven.

What color leather do ya got? Personally I have never driven anything with black leather, so I can't make a judgement on it. I would imagine that black would get pretty damn hot though. As far as gray leather goes, I never had a problem with it feeling too hot in the summer.

My leather's tan, but I didn't have any window tint on yet. So the sun just made it's happy way into my car to make it beyond toasty!!!

I'm getting 35% put on my windows in the next month, which won't do me much good during the dismal, gray Pittsburgh winter, but I hope it helps for next summer to reflect some of the heat back...

My leather is black :eek:...and my windows are tinted only 20%...that was 4 years ago....and even that has faded a bit.

Guy's fashion allows for those big, long baggy shorts that don't allow for much skin contact with the scorching leather seats...

I can say that I started my car once, put the AC on full blast, and waited 5 minutes so I could sit down and not feel my flesh adhering to the seat!!! :eek:

Hehe one of my ex's used to own a Neon and then bought a 4-door focus. :) Also my current g/f's sister owns an Echo. Good theory. :p

The things you heard about eclipses being girls cars:

The GS and RS model Eclipse were considered girl cars by us in that thread because guys shouldn't be driving them
Guys should be driving either the GS-T or GSX model eclipse, those are all man :D :D


btw kat i didn't know you could get neons with leather?

The new VW Beetle is about as girly as it could get I suppose...
Also Suzuki Vitara, Mitsi Pajero Junior and all the rest of that tiny ugly as SUV crap thats driving around. If you saw a guy in one of those you'd have to wonder....

From what I have heard...but not personally seen for myself...there were VERY FEW Neons that came with leather and I believe that was for some of the '95 ACR's.

My stock seats were replaced with Acura NSX seats.

I'm currently coveting my neighbor's Eclipse GSX. :(

I'd say my top three "chick" (sorry ladies) cars would have to be the Echo, VW Cabrio and 5th gen preludes. The Echo, I didn't see a guy in one of those for half a year after they came out, and that was after seeing 3 of them a day. And the Cabrio, it's just a fitting car for a girl. I don't have anything against them, but they just seem to be fitting for a girl. And as for the 5th gen preludes, pretty much every one of them in Saint John, New Brunswick is driven by a very attractive young lady. Not to say you are a pussy for driving one, I'd like to be able to drive one.

Kat, those seats look great!! Were they a direct fit, or did you need to modify the tracks? I imagine they probably sit a little lower than the Neon seats

verboom i think 5th gen preludes are pretty manly! I love those cars :D

Thanks! :) The floor itself needed some slight modification and new holes were drilled for the rails on the nsx seats...they are WAYYYY longer than the rails on the stock seats. Also wood blocks were placed under the carpet and under the back ends of the rails so that I wouldn;t be leaning too far back. The seats are hooked up so that they can be adjusted only while the car is on. I need to get the leather redone...but that's down the road a bit.

The leather in my Black Cougar is Black as well - and it does get warm, but after sitting on it for 5 secconds, the temperature is equalized with my body temperature. Maybe the quality has something to do with it to. By the way - Mercury and Lincoln leather is different than Ford leather.

And KatWoman - your Neon actually looks good :). Most modified Neons are Monstrosities - tacky looking. Your wheels look perfect, dark tint, and NO STICKERS make it look really nice. From a Ricer hater like me - thats QUITE a compliment :D!

As for chick cars - pretty much anything small, Wrong wheel drive (front wheel drive), and 4 banger power is a chick car :).

Do you mean nasty as in good or bad? I hate it when people describe something they like with "that looks bad" or "that's the shit" or other traditionally negative remarks. It confuses me too much.

Well...I guess that when they want to say something is shit, then they say "thats shit"..and when they think its good then they say " thats THE shit"...

Thanks for the compliemts.....I am used to getting flamed for fixing up my Neon on other boards but a big fat :flipa: for the haters hehe.

Skylines...I am actually the 4th Neon to inherit those seats. A friend of mine was at a junkyard getting a motor (which I later ended up with :o) and while he was there a wrecked up NSX was dropped off...so since he was there he got 1st dibbs...got em for $600 vs. $2000 at a dealership. He used to have a turbo Neon but returned it to stock to sell it. Afterward another friend got them, then Alex got them...now he is selling his Neon so I inherited them.

Funny thing about my car....the seats, the wheels, the NOS kit I never put in, and a few other misc parts were originally his...then Alex got them at some point, then I ended up with them. My exhaust is the only mod I am the original owner of :eek:

I think VW Golf appeals to girls.

lol... i know some thugs that say like "that's disgusting" but it means that it's good... well i say like "that's sick" which is good :) or "ill" there are so many that are even worse :D

But seriously, if I had a job that I had to commute a very long way, every day, and I had the money for an extra car. I would seriously think about getting a Echo, or Focus, just some economical car.

they hadle like a dream, the 6 speed versons are sweet , they sift extermly effortless, toss on a supercharger and exaust and you have your self a little hot rod ..... but on a lighter note if it a auto than yes i would agree that it is a "chick car"

Are all convertibles/cabriolets girly then? Does this include roadsters--which I think are cool. Well, I'll continue to like the Audi TT, despite its blatant girly-car qualities.

But the 6-speeders are only limited production cars, I think I would sooner have an MGF Trophy

no you can get the 6 speed in the ls package but i do hate ho there options are limeted

I see no one has mentioned most "SUVs". It's the new minivan! It's the bloody soccer-mom-mobile.

the mazda tribute and ford excape are defently chik cars i mean a suv with a transversly mounted engine? yuck

they might as well market them as lifted awd minivans!
