I recently purchased a 2001 Dakota Club Cab with a 3.9 V6. The previous owner replaced the motor in July of 2010 with a re-manufactured factory crate engine. It now has less than 10,000 miles on it. I filled it up last week to check out the gas mileage. I was shocked!:yikes: 12.5 mpg. When purchased new it came with a wheel upgrade from 15" to 16". The tires on it now are 265/70R16. If I keep the truck I'm going to put 255/65R16. Will this help on the gas mileage? I knew that the gas mileage would not be great but I expected at least 15mpg City/Highway not 12.5. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,

If the tire diameter changed from OEM and the computer wasn't flashed the mileage will be wrong giving you an innaccurate MPG.
FWIW, my 2000 QC with the 3.9 gets about 15mpg.

hi freebird , i know this thread is a few days old ,i just thought i would comment . my dakota came from the factory with 255/65/16 tires as an option, when i bought new tires i went with tire placard recc. 265/70/16 and i have noticed a substantial drop in mileage. i know not much difference in size but a drop nonetheless.
