1996 neon problem running/driving

I'm not sure what's wrong with it last night i was driving and then it made some kind of noise and it had no power really, it kept driving but barely then it would randomly click back into normal mode for a few minutes and drive perfectly fine, when it has no power the transmission sounds different when driving its like more quiet and i pulled over when this happened and the engine was like bouncing and running louder than normal. Does anybody have any ideas on what this could be? I checked my oil and tranny fluid its fine and just filled my coolant up last week.
