04 Rendezvous Speedometer Issue

My kids just bought an 04 RDV and it has done fine till today. My son-in-law was driving to work and he noticed that when he stopped the speedometer did not return to '0' when the car was still. When he started again, the gauge just added on speed until it showed he was going 110 mph on a residential street. While this might be exciting, it is not very good for knowing how things are really going.

What can we do to reset the speedometer and try to correct this problem. Thanks. MW

Take it to a gm dealer. I was told there is a known issue with the stepper motors that run the gauges. If you do a web search you will find people offering to overhaul the instrument cluster, too, some for under 150.00 - but if you ask (not demand) at a dealer they may have other options. I own an 04 Rendezvous it has similar problem" I am just saving up to replace the cluster. Above 80,000 miles its a tough discussion at the dealer.

Dealerships don't repair clusters, they "exchange" them......

True.

And the best way to see if exchange makes more sense than repair is to call or visit a dealer. If there is any factory or dealer goodwill you have to ask, and if there is a local or regional repay depot that is cost effective they will liked know in the body shop or the parts counter. .
