Problems with Auto Trans Goin into Gear

Howdy All, New to the site so, Howdy, first of all and, I appreciate any responses ahead of time!

Have a 98 Old Cutlass Auto Transmission and when it is in park I apply the brake and push the button on the T-HANDLE to release the lock to switch the transmission to drive, reverse etc and it will not budge without a major fight.

I thought it might be in park with the gear against the weight of the vehicle so, I tried to set the parking break and then put it in park but it still does the same thing. The button itself is hard to push in to even release the lock. Once the button is released, goin through the motions is easy and is no problems and goes in gear and shifts just fine. But just getting the tranny to unlock is the big issue.

I hope you can understand my problem, if not, I'll try to explain better.

Again, thanks for the replys!

So its getting the button to depressed if so, the handle itself or the internal mechanism is frozen, by your description, sounds like a good used part would fix your issue.

Yes, the button itself will not push in to release the shifter consistantly. It does it just about every time but not quite you try to shift it.

What used part might that be?...lol I thought maybe it had to do with the break sensor and it wouldn't let the button release because it didn't recognize the signal? But I'm still workin it out, Tranny's are not my strong suit.

Not a trans issue, if the button fights you that is just sticking if it will not move cannot be forced than usually that is the release solenoid.
