fuel pump issue?

My 2000 1500 started to miss at different speeds and then sometimes will not start.
My mechanic said most likely a fuel pump.
I thought that maybe I would try to eliminate one issue and replace the fuel filter, but when I loosened it, gas ran everywhere and would not stop.
I got more than 2 cups before I gave up and re-tightened the old filter.

My question is does that indicate a blown pump if the gas keeps siphoning through the pump?

it is common to have a good amount of fuel to leak out especially if the tank is full..

the fuel filter needs replacing 30-40,ooomi have a small cup to catch the fuel ..you could also use a small funnel with a hose to it and direct the fuel into a container..

what is needed is to check the pressure with a pressure guage..you need 53-62 psi with the key on to start..then the pressure with key off should hold with in a few psi after 15min..

a new pump should put out 60-62 plus psi with key on engine off!


use the purolator gas filter good quaility at a fair price.

if the pressure is low get the delphi pump//no airtex pumps !

I heard I would get a small amount of gas from the lines but when I disconnect the filter the gas POURS out. I funneled about a cup into a gas can and used 3 bath towels soaking up more.... still didn't stop.

I thought maybe there was a part of the pump cycle that would let it do this.
So I primed it and repeated the procedure ( pulled relay,relieved pressure, pulled filter) same result.

make sure the front of the vehicle is up higher than the rear, the flow will stop...

so what was the fuel pressure ???.......

When I checked the pressure it primed up to 60 then ran at 50 -55
When it was missing and then stalled it dropped to 40..
Sometimes it was at 0 but also would not start, guess its a pump or wiring issue

REGULATOR is most likely not the problem. it could be electrical. check for voltage at the pump.. also the fuel pump relay may need replacing..

since the pressure is varying greatly this looks like a pump issue..

also if the pump is replaced the fuel filter needs replacing.

the ground at the frame rail fuel tank may also be corroded to copper dust..
