91 Regal AC Recharge Question

Hello, I live in Houston (hot as hell:) I was thinking of recharging my AC myself, but looking into the service manual I realized that 91 Regal used freon (refrigerant 12). What is the cheapest solution to recharge my AC? From what I read, I would have to retrofit the AC system for R-134a, due to EPA regulations against freon (I don't want to do this if it is costly). Are there still shops that carry freon? How much $ should I save up for this project? Any help would be appreciated, thanks for reading!

You might want to consider recharging with Enviro-Safe Refrigerants which are hydrocarbon refrigerants (http://autorefrigerants.com/Envirotechnical.htm) that are ultra-efficient.

Q: Can I legally mix Enviro-Safe (http://autorefrigerants.com/co00033.htm) ™ Refrigerant with R-12 or HFC-134a? A: The United Sates Environmental Agency (EPA) prohibits the mixing of certain types of refrigerant that are not already "pre-approved mixes". Although mechanically there is no risk of incompatibility, there is legislation that prohibits such acts. (Although it will certainly work well as a replacement for either R-12 or 134a, if your car is still an R-12 unit it would first have to be defined as a 134a or other type of non-ozone-depleting unit before you could legally install it).

To back up Hotz28, I have used nothing else for 7 years. No need for R12 or conversion.
Oh and btw DuPonts patent ran out on R12, and so no one else could use it they created the "Ozone scare". EVIL!
