hello,

1982 Chevy P30 Chassis, Forward Control, 5.7 V8 4BBL.

New starter, new igniton switch. There is no Neutral Safety Switch (transmission mounted) I jump two wires to allow it to start.

When i turn the key to start, the starter engages. when the key springs back, the starter still engages. The engine turns over but will not start (diff prob.) The starter just keeps cranking.

I dont know much about the electrical side of vehicles. How do I troubleshoot this problem? I assume the ignition wire to the starter solenoid is sending 12V but it is still hot when the key is sprung back to the run position. What would cause that? Is there some type of electrical component malfunctioning or as simple as a faulty wire? Any help would be appreciated.

Better fix that neutral saftey switch before someone starts in in gear and runs over something or somebody.

How or when did the problem start?
If after a starter replace than that is problem.
If two small wires to starter solenoid make sure they are not crossed.

Remove the purple start wire to solenoid and check for 12 volts on it key in run position.
It should only have 12 volts key in start position.
