Hello AF! I put aside my other work since Im planning on attending a "It came from Japan" contest in july here in IL. I also love the sunline kit, so when JetModel made this available I just had to jump on it. My plan was to just replace the body on my previous Z which was flawed for this. Now I think I will just build the entire thing.
To start off this is what paint/color I will be going with:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2458/5761847858_1d26200e1d_b.jpg
Some of my new toys :)
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5108/5761847872_a3be17635b_b.jpg
The only moldlines I found on the resin kit. The rest is really clean and fits spot on!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3313/5761847854_da4e3cbc5c_b.jpg
The only moldlines on the body are on the rear bumper, hatch and front pillars. I needed to do a LOT of sanding and prep to get rid of them since these paints dont hide imperfections at all. A minor thing compared to the color options and finish they give :grinno:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3188/5761847836_9fdfd4573f_b.jpg
After I smooth the white basecoat I will paint it of course :p
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3376/5761313555_bf1fafddb6_b.jpg
I used Alclad2 gloss black base for the first time and for some reason it started doing this (I do have an air trap). I got it as a ready to go gloss base for cf which I can put on with my airbrush for more control. Plus I will not have to mess with cans that stink up the room.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5310/5761856488_2f2bc93edf_b.jpg
I also got started on the interior. I decided to try the suede effect again to see if i could improve on my last try. The paint I used last time was too thick so the effect looked somewhat heavy to me and some detail was lost. This time around the effect is much "lighter" and better looking.

As far as wheels go I have 2 choices. I am leaning toward the RE30's (not sure on the black lip yet) and the BBS wheels.

there looks like quite a bit of texture in that last layer of paint you have there.
Have you been sanding down paint between coats or just applying paint over paint?

I sanded the basecoat smooth. It's my first time using candy so I didn't want to overdo it. Tomorrow I will smooth the candy and clear coat after I cf some body parts. I hope that will do the trick

Hello again again folks. I got a little bit done yesterday. Here it goes
Nice color and wheels options. First couple of candy-painted pics look orange, not that red of the final 3. What does it actually look like? And what´s that yellow stripe on the roop?
Will follow of course.
The 1st 3 are the gold basecoat needed to achieve the final color. Once it's finished I will post more pics. As for the stripe on the hood you will see :)

You are welcome MidMizar. The paint settled so it's ok now. But they were primed and the primer went on fine so I have no idea why it happened.
So I started some CF yesterday after having to repaint one of the seats after I damaged it. I am using my favorite decals of course.
http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/3176/370z017.jpg
Since I was going to cf the roof I didn't bother painting it entirely, hence the stripe :lol2:
http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/1103/370z015.jpg
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/1921/370z016.jpg
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/3606/370z018.jpg
After some shaping with my finger, a brush to finish the edges, a little hairdryer love and trimming I got it done
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/8253/370z019.jpg
I next moved to the sideskirt and rears. One thing that bothers me intensly is cf that is not aligned. The 1:1 cf car parts that I have seen are made with 1 piece of cf so it flows in the same general direction. Which is what I try to do, which can be a pain with twill weave. So the front bumper will be nice to cover. Anyway here are my pieces so far.
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/6485/370z023.jpg
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8184/370z024.jpg
And what they look like on the car. I will clear coat these along with the car to not waste urethane clear.
http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/7465/370z026.jpg
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/2703/370z027.jpg

If you achieve such result on the hood, it may deserve to get CF too ! I think if roof is cf also can be the hood.

Thanks Cesar. I will post pics of how I did the seats later. Its same as flocking
I got the lip done this morning. It took 11 pieces to complete. My goal as stated before is to get the cf to align as much as possible so that it looks like 1 solid piece.
I started with the front edge, sides, tops, center, bottom and finally inside the fender. Here we go

Nice job on that front lip! Looks quite challenging. How do you "shrink" or "bend" waterslides? I´m specially talking about the roof work. Do you use a "microsol" or something like that?
About the hood: the hood is usually the first piece to replace to carbon, so I would say go for it too. However it would really be a one-of-a-kind if you don´t.
Now i really want to see that body finished!

Hello AF! I got the CF on all body parts done so I figured I would update the work so far. I hope to get the clearcoat sprayed friday. To start off
Impressive job bro!
How did you get that effect on the seat?
Cesar
Gracias Cesar! I basically painter the part a quickly put the embossing powder on before the paint dried. After that I shook off the excess powder and airbrushed the part. I got better results by thinning the paint a lot so that it would not look "thick" You can get clear, black, and white opaque powder. Here is an example

Thanks Mirianitem for the compliment. I use Champ decal softener and a hair dryer to speed things up at times.
I am so happy since this is the first time I ever use 1 cf sheet without completely screwing up and having to use an entire new sheet :runaround:
The only issue I had is one I can live with on the hood wich I am sure I will be able to hide well. Everything else turned out ok.
To start I cut the cf on the rear piece, then finished it by adding the top piece of the "wing" part and the bottom

Here are the finished sides, grill and mirrors

Then I moved on to the hood and pillars
http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/1236/370z037.jpg
After a some trimming, a lot of decal softener and a tiny bit of hair dryer love I got it done. Here is what it looks like. I am using my other Z's chassis for the moment just so that I can get a better view of what it might look like in the end.

I also see carbon Recaro´s inside? CF CF CF!!!
I´m following all the way.
Love your CF work :bigthumb: , good job!
If only I were so talented with CF...
Great work and flawless result !!
excellent carbon work. your build is very nice. looking forward to the finished look.
Thank you guys for the kind words. CF just takes a lot of patience (which of course I lack on most days) and in my case, A LOT OF CF DECALS! :banghead:
So I got to work on the seats, floor mats, flocking, cf etc. I chose kevlar from Studio27 for the seats. It is difficult to use since it is pretty thick. Therefore I divided the pieces

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/5582/370z056.jpg
I also used cf on the center console, gauge pods and radio area on dashboard, and also PE pedals.

Even though they will not be noticeable once the car is assembled, I made my own mats. I just enjoy doing it haha

I think I'm gonna quit modeling :p Great job, with so many details. And your CF work is really good. What about the dashboard? CF maybe? LOL
I used to choose a couple of colors and paint the interior just like that. After seeing this and many other models here I totally changed my mind about it.
Willing to see it completed.

Yo tambien :iceslolan The dashboard gauges are getting cf as well as the center where the radio and controls are. Tomorrow I will put the harness together and clearcoat the kevlar on the seats and maybe install them. Might even clearcoat the car also. I would like to get this done by the end of the month. Sadly I ran out of cf and cannot do the rear wing :crying: It was ab afterthought anyway. I'm also considering a roof spoiler.... so many desicions haha

Hello AF! Another quick update
Looking really good.
Ur using sms cf? I like the orange/black combo.
Thank you midmazar. I am actually using studio27 decals. I prefer them because they bond to each other so well that if done right, most repairs are almost impossible to spot.
As far as the car I got the clearcoat on. I followed someone's advise from a a post I cannot find. Anyway, every coat of 2k clear afeer the initial one gets thinned down. I got a better result on all parts besides the body. So much so that I will only lightly polish them, if at all! The body hdidn't turn out the same due to my candy now going on smooth. Live and learn I guess. I also got to work on the harnesses.

shiney but i would say that there's still an uneven surface on that clear coat.
that's the sort of thing that is the hardest to get rid of, especially on the scale that we work on.
you can reduce its effect by taking photos from slightly further away.
good work with the embossing powders too.
I've got a bottle of microbeads that I still haven't gotten round to use as surface texture yet; it's mainly been used for mixing fillers.

Hello AF!
Real qucik update. The interior is almost done and I got the body polished. Sadly I rubbed thru clearcoat on 2 spots. They are on the hood and edge of fender. I might be able to fix the fender. The hood is another issue. Might use decal to cover it :(

Thanks guys for the nice compliments. That's what I love about pitures, they make everything look better. You can see the 2 spots to the left of the camera's reflection on the hood. Where the hood is raised and on the top of the fender that meets the hood, on the very edge :(
I will probably finish the interior tomorrow, then work on fitting Hobby Design's RE30s into pegasus' aluminum wheel sleeves. Hope it looks good since it's my first choice.

that last bit of polishing did a good job of that slightly wobbly reflection from the first set of photos.
now you're left with the difficult decision as to what to do about panel lines.

HAHA silly man :p The only one that kinda worries me is the rear hatch. I did scribe the lines before painting. Bit the edges on the hatch are cone. Xacto knife time I guess.
The uneven look on paint is another thing I knew would go away with polishing. Problem is that sometimes I get a little too obsessed with the smallest hairline scratch. Then I end up going thru the clearcoat :crying:

Hello AF!
I have been busy so I have a small update. I pretty much finished the interior, unless I add the nitrous I keep contemplating. Started working on the chassis, and had an issue. Let's take a look...
Here's the interior. I lost the Bride decal for the second seat, so I switched them.

I am still debating the wheels, but lean to the RE30's. One is from hobby design and the other (smaller lip) is aoshima. I like the larger lip on the HD in pegasus sleeve. I am talking to a friend about making my own sleeve though.
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/3176/370z017.jpg
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/8253/370z019.jpg
The chassis upset me this morning. I painted it with tamiya xf-56, which was thinned with denatured alcohol for airbrushing, and reason the tape ruined my finish by releasing adhesive on the surface. I used tamiya's tape, so I am stuck for now. It evend ruined my alcladII

Thanks for the input guys. I am headed in that direction after some thought. And yes I rubbed thru that corner Marianitem. Easy fix I hope :)
So today I decided to work on the wheels. Using hobby design's RE30's I Started to sand down the outside of the wheel to make it fit inside the sleeve, then I cut the "face" off in different widths. I did this in my last Z, but found it lacking after some time. So I tried to get more out of this set. I'm using the back end since the front is stepped. As you can see the edge is all wrong and rough
http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/2691/370z076.jpg
After wetsanding the inside and edges with 800 and 1000 grit paper, I achieved a more desireable look
http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/7232/370z085.jpg
After that I used some blue magic metal polish along with my rotary tool and some buffing pads and got some shine out of these puppies.
http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/6263/370z094.jpg
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2491/370z095.jpg
The reason I cut the wheel off in different widths is because it buts against the raised edge on the back of the sleeve. Thus giving me different lip sizes. Plus I can also slide the face around to adjust it as needed.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9040/370z091.jpg
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3720/370z092.jpg
And here is a before (the one on the left had been lightly polished by hand) and after side by side shot. I am very pleased with the new look. Now to finish the other 3, and to get some detail in them.

Wow that is one sick lip!!
Thanks Guys. I am trying to get as an aggresive lip as I can. I will have to play with the suspension a little bit to get it. Especially in front.
Still waiting on PE brakes, but I got the wheels done :) I know it's not the greatest lighting, but I could not help myself.

Hello AF!
Well folks I have meade a bit of progress, and also took a step backwards at the same time. I recieved my PE brakes finally so I got to work on the chassis and also tried to repair the spot I rubbed thru on the fender. Sadly the decal either did not adhere to the surface (which I doubt), or the 2K clear affected it somehow. I have never had this happen after putting clear on CF. No biggie since I had a spot that was driving me nuts on the hood's CF

At least I got the wheels/brakes done and the chassis in in progress

On the chassis I added a rear differntial cooler, rear springs, and the right and left axle shafts off a GT-R since the tube provided by tamiya looks very silly

Hello AF! After a nice Florida trip I am back and ready to roll. Progress is slow since I am waiting on the body. I got to work on the hood cf, decided to add cf to the spoiler and got to work on the clear once it dried. I also tried to replicate Kinetix 370Z exhaust, but don't think it looks right.
First things first

Here we go
I used evergree tubing, some putty, tamiya gloss black and alclad to finish.
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1449/orlando001.jpg
http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/3176/370z017.jpg
http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/1921/370z016.jpg
I masked the body with tamiya tape since it's easy to remove and followed it with 3m green tape since itssolvent resistant.
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/1017/370z003.jpg
Sadly when I pulled the tape it must have pulled the edge of the CF to lift it once I layed some 2k clear on it
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3235/370z006.jpg
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/7532/370z020.jpg
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/8253/370z019.jpg
I will let everything cure and hopefully the cf will settle down some. Then I will go from there. 'Til next time :)

Quick update on the cf. This time I waited nearly 3 days before laying the 2k clear on. Better results I think. I am so happy I followed the tip on thinning the clear 50% after the 1st wet coat :iceslolan

There was a tiny bit of lifting, but I will wait to see what happens. I also added cf to the plate area since 1) I have seen the aftermarket piece and 2) I couldn't polish he area well enough. Easy fix

Nice house! I mean... hood!
But the clear attacked the CF again? Why is that?
Do you use microset or microsol or just water and patience for that kind of hood´s CF decal? I´m new to CF over hoods and wanna start with a similar piece (stock z32 hood).
