Looking for cheap base power!

I am looking for cheap, reliable car with the most power. I figure If I buy a car for 3-5k put 3-5k in it, I can have upwards of 4-600hp which would totally own these new cars that are coming out with less than 400hp but are still fast. So almost like a sleeper... I realize weight and other factors come into play which is why I researched lots of cars and there 0-60 0-100 times and compared them. Here is what I found so far:

Acura Legend with a Type II, V6 6speed (1993-1995 I think)
Prelude 2.2L VTEC (I forget what years,,, around '97 I think)

Both of these cars can be purchased in that price range and with some heavy mods, headers, exhaust, turbo, you name it.. it can fly. Now I also understand that a turbo and other mods make it less reliable. But I will take what I can get.

I hope you see where I am going with this... Right now I have a 5 speed civic with roughly 100hp... 0-60 in... ZzzZZz oh I'm driving? Ya it's that bad. That's why I'm upgrading. And it has to be a stick.

Just want to see if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

If I were you, I'd save the $ and buy something better that's faster right off the bat...

Neon SRT, Subaru WRX/STi, Lancer Evo come to mind. But like I said, you'd have to save some money compared to what you were talking to get into any of those. You *might* consider buying one that was R-titled and trying to rebuild it yourself, but depending on the wreck and damage, it might not be worth your while to try.

What about Civic Si or Sentra SE-R models? They've got a little more go than the typical engine for each, but they won't have crazy outrageous prices. Plus the aftermarket availability for both will be pretty solid.

I'm not sure you're going to get that horsepower level on a 5K$ budget ? These import cars are capable of fantastic power levels considering the engine size . But these engines were never designed for that and need significant upgrading to the engine block and all associated equipment to reach that level and stay together . Also you're looking at upgrading everything ( i.e.- transmission , suspension , etc. ) to withstand the power . You certainly will have to significantly upgrade your braking system - that goes without saying ! Plus the required maintenance would be significant and would have to be strictly adhered to . I agree with Speediva , why not get a high performance model ( car make of your choice ) and enjoy the added power available without all the hassle of trying to build a 400-600HP street car? Yes , it can be done but it will involve lots of money and total dedication to achieve your goal ! Having said that and with all due respect , good luck with whatever direction you choose to take and keep us updated !

Unless you are just stuck on imports, older mustangs can be acquired relatively cheap. 4.6 models are not as mod friendly as the older 5.0's buts stock they still have more power than the models you mention in your post. Yes I know everyone has them, which kinda sucks, but you do get a lot of bang for the buck in the horse power department. You can also look at Mark Viii's. Stock they are 290 hp. They are a bit weighted and expensive to repair, but you can probably acquire one for less than 2k. I have had one since 1998 and love it. Its a great sleeper and with the right mods can be an awesome car. because of it's weight, it's not the most agile car, but if you just want to blow by imports from 0-60, it's quite effective. Just my .02
