1996 chevy cheyenne ignition setup

hey, I'm thinking about getting a hotter ignition setup for my 96 chevy cheyenne 1500. I'm not looking for a drag racing setup but I i was just wondering what are some good brands and if this is really a good idea and what it really does thanks :biggrin:

You've already got more than enough spark power IF (big IF) the original system is working PROPERLY.

Save your money. You could add aftermarket spark boxes and such, but you won't gain power or efficiency--except that your wallet will be thinner and lighter.

I agree, your origional equipment assuming it is working right should be fine but if you really want to add to it I would look into MSD. There are many other good aftermarket ignition systems out there now but MSD has been doing it forever and they have kept up with new technology

Hotter ign can cause spark to burn threw top of pistons.
Your OEM ign has plenty of spark already.

If you want to do something good for it get some new AC delco plugs and wires.

you can get a coil that puts out a little extra voltage than OEM coil...problem is that amount of extra spark over the OEM design does nothing but cost you money !

If the vehicle has the original coil replacing the coil and plug wires with new OEM would be the proper action..using ac delco plugs..

replacing the cap/rotor and cleaning electrical connections ..also using dielectric grease in the plug wire boots keeps the electrical connections sound and free from failure.

if your engine had points and you installed an ignitor kit with a matched hi output coil then you would see a very big difference...

thats all 1970's and earlier stuff !

Ok another question i have is sometimes when i get on the gas or just cruising over 55 there is a miss every once in a while. i have brand new rotor,cap and AC delco plugs, I didnt replace the wires because im kinda broke :( but i was wondering if it could be the coil too?

measure the wire resistance with an ohmmeter...use the dielectric grease when re installing in the boot ends...any wires with high resistance out of the normal range/open means you need new ones..


this would be the test required first to determine misses at higher RPM.

the coil if defective would cause alot more than a random miss..

the other item would be the distributor bearing/gear etc...

check that the distributor shaft/rotor does not move around too much...if the cap has acring it is a sign that the shaft is wobbling around too much...bearing check...

the distributor gear is more of distributor removal to check that this gear is not worn ...experienced person can determine this by rotor movement ..
