Revell 2010 Ferrari California

Getting back up to speed on building after going through an estate sale of my Mother-in-Law’s goods. We still have a storage locker here of stuff that wasn’t included in the sale, but can work through it more slowly.

I started a club project, the Revell Ferrari California. It was due to be completed at the May meeting over a week ago. I am woefully behind because of family and work matters. However, I am starting to make some progress.

Attached are some photos of where I am at. Color will be Bianco Fuji from Scale Finishes. The color is a pearl white. Scale Finishes provides you with the basecoat and pearl coat.

Wheels are still up in the air. I had acquired a set of Hobby Design 20 inch wheels for this, but two of the wheels are misshapen enough to not be useable. I mentioned this to the Hobby Shop I got the set from and they contacted Hobby Design and got a replacement set. It just arrived today. And two of the wheels are misshapen as in the original. However, with the 2 sets of wheels, I should be able to do them. I also have a set of Aoshima 5 spoke wheels as an option. I am still on the fence as to which one.

Well, getting back to the Ferrari California open top. I’m almost done with the interior. Dashboard needs some more cleanup. Detailed out the interior, including adding a side view mirror control on driver door panel; seat belts and the seat belt straps on the seats. Will need to do some test fits before finishing off.

For those who have not done the Ferrari California open top, there are gaps between body and interior needing action. To do it right, you need to assemble interior and chassis and do a test fit to see where fill in is needed. Once fill in is done, you can finish paint the body and go on to assembly.

As I said, I have some cleanup yet to do in the interior such as clean up the PE Air vents and the center display.

Keep up the progess! Thanks for the tip re: the gaps. Good to know once I finish filling and sanding all the sink marks on the bodies of the three that I'm working on!

I’ve been spending more time trying to get my Revell 56 Delray Street Machine done. I had a paint problem with the Testor’s Classic White, needing a sanding, reshoot and reclear. So, the work on the California has lagged. I’m way past my club’s deadline to finish this as a club project, so no time factor other than the 2012 Ferrari Expo.

Anyway, as I previously had mentioned, there is a gap at the rear of the interior meeting the body in the open top version. The gap is about 3/64 inches. I finagled the interior as best I could, but that seems to be the fact. Another club member experienced a similar problem and wound up using putty as he had fully painted the body.

So, I decided to do a little better being forewarned. I have a store of various Evergreen Plastic pieces: strips, rounds, shapes and sheets. I found a strip for HO scale lumber 4x4 that was about the right size:

Sanding off the paint on the back of the interior tub, I added some Evergreen strip tabs and glued a piece of the Evergreen to the back and then shaped it. Some quick putty work yielded the following result:

Then I did a quick fit to the body shell and it looks about right:

Anyway, I am pretty much done with the interior once I clean up and repaint. Purists will not that I did not add the release handles for the seat to fold or the coat hooks on the backs of the headrests. Well, I think I have dawdled enough on this. I will spend some time on the engine to detail it out instead.
