Hey All,

Ive been reading this forum for about the past week as i have just purchased a 98 jeep cherokee sport 4wd. it is a fantastic car. but i have yet to really take it out for a spin because it needs some work. i bought for $500 with 108k miles on it. the water pump needs a replacement, the cat is missing, according to the owner the whole exhaust system needs an overhaul, and judging by what ive read this week i think my NSS just went. i'm debating between taking my car to a certified jeep dealer and having them do repairs or having a friend of mine do all the work as he is a certified mechanic. what should those repairs run me? thnx for all the advice ahead of time.

Just wanted to say hi. The repairs will probably cost more than you paid for the vehicle. If you do the repairs yourself, parts is the only cost. It's a great way to learn.

You can call a parts stores, they will give you a price on the parts. Labor is free, if you do the work yourself, otherwise, between 80 and 100 bucks an hour.

diddo jdl. Not bad for 5\$500. I would let my friend that is ASE do it. You don't need a dealer to do it if it was $500

Dealers are a ripoff -EXCEPT when it comes to buying some parts. Seems that only Jeep can make a decent CPS without it failing in 1 year.
Most of your problems--exhaust ( any good exhaust shop can set you up good with aftermarket Cats and the rest). Waterpump-any mech can do it.
NSS if its bad easy replacement.

YOU MUST LEARN YOUR JEEP--otherwise it will eat ya alive.
