Starters dead

Hello. My starter died in my car and a mechanic jumped it so that it started up to get home. After I shut the car off though, it failed again. He used a special tool on the starter to start it. Does anyone know what that tool is that can jump a starter?

Thanks

Scott

Yeah...he prolly used the ever rare box end wrench ;) :D

Most likely the selenoid is bad...it is the electrical part of the starter...you can short across the selenoid to get it to kick, but the key has to be on. I have only done it once or twice on other motors, so I can't tell you exactly which wires/bolts you short the wrench across...

If you have a stick, park on hill facing downhill...turn the key on, put it in 2nd, start to coast and then pop the clutch to turn the engien over, and push it back in and step on the gas at the same time. Sometimes you can push it fast enough to do this on a flat road, but that is tough... If you have a slushbox, I think you are SOL until you get a starter...just rip one from a junkyard, or get a rebuilt from an Autozone or equivelant. Your mechanic should be able to do that job for you in 15 minutes.
