I've been tinkering on this for a couple of months. I started with a white metal Bosica coupe and shaped the rear clip hammer forming over a diecast model of a 356 cab then soldered in place.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x37/914joe/50%20cab/50001.jpg

There is alot of work between this pic and the last that I did'nt get any pic's of. The windshield frame was made from 2 sheets of brass soldered together leaving a step for the window frame to sit in. I soldered in place door jambs with hinges and hinged the front and rear lids. There were some parts that came from some unfinshed or abandon projects. The scratch made floor and the working steering came from the parts box. I also molded a cast the correct dash I had previously made.

Made the luggage rack from brass rod

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x37/914joe/50%20cab/50003.jpg

Alot a small details will be added to the dash. The radio has a chrome trim ring that I've made in the past using silver wire but was'nt completly satisified. This time I cut the inside opening from silver sheet then silver soldered that to brass sheet then shaped the outside. The dash will get a handfull of different size knobs and switches along with some machined gauges that will show up in pics better after painting.

It is quite obvious you put alot of work into this, fascinating project. I am really amazed with the luggage rack, very intricate considering the small scale. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for looking fellas!!! I really enjoy making these little trinkets & parts... The time consuming part of making them all fit together, not so much:banghead: I'm hoping to finish the body work this weekend and move on to painting. Then I get to work on the wicked 25hp motor:biggrin:

Finally finding time to dust off the bench with these short days. I started working on some motor parts. I know it's hard to get excited about a 35hp motor but... I started by removing the cast in generator base from the fan shrould replacing that with brass and reworking the generator. Turned the fuel pump, filter & coil in my moto-tool and made a bracket from brass. Made the distributor from brass.

Painting is a drag:runaround: After alot of priming & sanding I painted the body parts with single stage Glasurit then alot more sanding with micromesh & polishing.

Very nice indeed.
Can you tell more on the working hinges you made for the doors and hoods? Did you make your own hinging mechanism or did you improve the kit parts? I can imagine that it is not an easy task on this scale.

Furthermore, how did you solder the brass parts onto the white metal? It is known that white metal will melt rapidly, so what is the maximum heat you can use on this material?

914joe
11-20-2011, 07:29 PM
Dominique, I made most of the hinges. For the front trunk I used the hinges from the kit and soldered .005 tubing to the body. I also add some bondo blocks inside the body that the hinges rub against to make some friction to hold the lid up. The rear lids hinges were replace with copies I cut from brass sheet and made a c channel that I used to mount to the body. The doors I first made up some door jambs. To those I add a piano hinge made from 4 peices of .005 tubing soldering 2 peices to the jamb side first. Then I drill holes in the door where the hinge parts will meet. I then take the 2 peices of tubing that will mount to the door and add some drips of solder. Then I pin those tubing peices to the other peices on the door jamb and hang the door lining up the drilled holes with the solder drips. Then add enough heat to through the holes in the door to join the hinge peices to the door without fusing the entire hinge together. I hope this makes some sence:screwy:

The maximum heat you can use will depend on the thickness of the material. I use a 40watt iron and will add heat to the brass and use the molten solder to heat white metal and not the iron.

Lovely model and very classy modelling. I like your approach, if the kit part is poor or missing make your own. I try to work the same way, the results will hopefully be worth all the extra effort.

Lee, I like your approach too... I used your hinge technique for making hinge supports by folding sheet brass I saw on your GTO build:iceslolan

Yup... The steering is a little tricky getting the linkage right. Hooking it all up at the end is going to be a pain.

Here's a pic of the Bosica wheels from the kit. I polished the hub caps and I'm using whitewalls I got from a diecast.

Joe, the wheels look amazing quality, are they resin centres on turned rims?
I was considering giving modelling a rest after my DBR1 build but quite like the idea of trying a 1/43 project; how's the quality of the bosica kit?

Cheers,
Lee

914joe

Lee, The wheels have turned rims with formed photoetch centers. Those wheels are awesome!!! The quality of the parts in the Bosica kits is great. They come with alot of photoetch parts, many turned parts, nice white metal castings and brass or nickel for the doors & lids. There are fitting issues with the doors and I end up replacing the floor. Considering that they are @ 30 years old now they are great. There has been a few updates on this kit over the years with subtle body changes and better detail on some of the parts. If you ever end up building a 1/43 356 I have molds for some improved parts.

I finished detailing the motor this week. I'm happy with how it turned out but a little dissapointed with how crowded it became once everything is in place. I had carb linkage to install but ran out of room. All the inginition parts need to be a hair smaller next time.

some real nice ones in 1/48th scale for military scenes.

Progressing slowly.... It seems the more free time I find to build the more my lady finds for me to do:crying:

I mounted the wheels & tires and set the ride height. There is not much room for my steering to work and going from mockup to final assembly I had to re-do the steering linkage 3 times to fit and have the correct angle on the column.

The seats I removed the molded in piping, did some reshaping, scribed in a line around the edge for some new piping and made some brackets from scrape P/E parts. Made the only 2 gauges this car would of come with, spedo & clock. The kit came with the turned gauges and the decals came out of the parts box.

Got the doors almost finished. The panels I made from styrene, made the interior door handles from silver soldered to a brass pin ,added rivets and made the tops from wood that I tung oiled. Still need to put a dot of white on the window cranks. Made the sun visors from a some p/e parts and used green acetate. Made a few of these befor ending up with an accectable pair that stayed together and did'nt have any glue blobs. Finished the top boot and added rivets. I did'nt drill the body for the rivets so I had to cut the heads off... For everyone mounted I lost at least 2:runaround: I did get lucky with the antenna in the pic... I had it pop out of my tweezers and went stright up, had some hang time & landed right in front of me:smile: That's all for now... Should'nt take long to finish now.

Finished the last few details and gave it a final polish:naughty: Had a little drama fitting all the parts under the body the last time. Had the body off the base and mounted the small badge on the passenger side and the windshield wipers so the could be glued from behind. Did'nt check their fit then went tried to glue the body to the base. Had the epoxy 1/2 going off befor realizing that badge was binding on the floor. Soo I'm separating the body & base with epoxy strings all over then grab the dremel, switch bits, grind the back of the badge throwing dust all over, clean it up then mount the body back to the base. It all worked out and was able to clean up the mess:smile:
