Hello,
today i want to start my latest wip.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3966663233623963.jpg
The Entex Lotus 72D.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3863373961343634.jpg
This picture shows the version which i want to build.
Its the john player special cup at brands hatch at the end of the 1972 season.
The car started with the number one on the hood, because Emerson is the the new worldchampion 1972!
The entex kit shows some special items, that only come to show at the end of the 1972 season.
Lotus put a movable rearwing on the car, something like Red Bull is doing with their frontwing today. But that was nearly 40 years before!
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6637383630356431.jpg
The rubber tyers are very soft,so i decided to make some out of resin. Here is a comparison with a tamiya 1/12 scale car.In front are the massive rubbers from entex.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3631643061393833.jpg
After some days, here are the results.
I also want to make a version of the early lotus 72.In this case i need some tyres with profil. Now i have a mould to start this after the end of the jps car.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3936326364666163.jpg
Here are the actual parts. The car was started, but i cut them of and started new.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3734303564303064.jpg
This is a part i dont know what is behind.
Its right and left from the tube.
It looks like a service cover, but what is behind them?
Can someone help me with this?
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3636656564396230.jpg
The cockpit cowling is wrong in the kit.The lotus cowling is a one part piece from clear acrylic glass and only the part at top is not painted.
This will be one of the next steps. To make my own vaccum thermoforming box.But later more...
I hope you enjoy this wip.Make a lot comments,please!
Kind Regards
Christian

I hope that your bench has enough space for this HUGE kit, :lol2:.
Always liked the old JPS LOTUS cars, so this will be a thread worth watching.

Little step forward.
I made the service holes for the fuelbags on the left and right side of the tube.
I found one pic from the real car.Its not the jps car,but a lotus 72.
The services hole show the rear cover, with the throttle linkage to the engine.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6232393131353638.jpg
I drilled some holes into the plastc, which is really some 2,5mm thick, and made them a little thinner.
After that,i glued a thin sheet of alu behind, and drilled the inner diameter out.A few holes for the screws and finish!
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3066306466386335.jpg
The chassis need a lot of sanding work, because the guy who started the kit was using a lot, really a lot,of glue.
Especially at the parts who can be seen!
Kind Regards
Christian

..another small step forward.
The original cockpit was looking like that.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6564643930323163.jpg
..at least of some pics i have.
Entex made the direction from the fire extinguisher wrong, and too long is he also.
I also made some changes to the seat, cut a part of,and the chassis behind the gear level was also slightly changed.
There must be added another few sheet to it.
The next pics shows on the left the original entex, and on the right my changed version.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3039656336613664.jpg
I also have changed the cushion bags in the foot space. They are wrong on my pics.

Hi
It is not the throttle linkage. It is the gear linkage. The throttle is activated with a simple cable connected to the top of the engine between the intakes.

Hi,
just made a few changes in the cockpit area.
The gear lever was scratch made. The kit doesent have a fuel filler,so i made it scratch.
Some changes to the seat, but not ready yet.The seat become a layer real leather from MFH.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6534343964633639.jpg
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3461346436613766.jpg
The service cover had become some stuff behind.I made both fuel tanks with some fittings in front. Its not much, but now you can see something behind the covers.

great work and impressive model.
It reminds to me when I had to paint 2 of theme, with a scratchbuild conversion to obtain Rindt Car in gold leaf livery ;)

Thanks for sharing the pics of your conversion.
I have two questions.
How did you manage to make the tires with the structure?Or did you take the slicks from the box?
Did you change the cockpit cowling at rindts car?
At the real car the used a one piece cowling instead the two part cowling from the box.
Thanks!
Nothing new from me.The only one is the cockpit with selfmade rivets inside.

ah christian, I only fixed that part of the models. Just primer and paint for body.
It was done by italian engeneer from this website:
http://www.collezioneingrao.com/
think he also sells the Tk for rindt car, but beware cause prices are stellar.
Really dunno how he fixed the wheels.

Hi,
its time to bring an new update here.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3366303262393933.jpg
The cockpit is just ready for do some cable work and stuff like that.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6239326635353661.jpg
Inside i try to do something new.I used woodglue and a toothpick to make some rivets on parts where i can dont drill holes.
It looks a bit non-uniform,but i think its ok.
I also aged the seat a bit with tamiya oil stain.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3238363563636234.jpg
Today i made the clearcoat, which must dry some days before i´m save of fingerprints on it.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3235376264393664.jpg
The rest of the bodywork will become his color in a few days.
Thats it for today.
Thanks for watching!

hi christian,
i think having the rivets not uniform and not perfectly in line actually adds to the realism of the build. having spent a lot of hours looking through references of old race cars of the 60s and 70s i am under the impression that most of them were "slapped" together, sometimes rather crude, other times, well a bit more thoroughly. in any case, i have done a few hires textures for old formula cars (for the game gpl) and i actually make a point of trying to get a certain bit of randomness into the rivets, going slightly this way, slightly that way so they are NOT perfectly alligned as you would get on today's computer engineered cars. back then the holes were drilled by people with hand tools, not robots running computer scripts :D
the car, or should i say cars :), is coming along nicely. and being a lotus fan for some time now, i saw one or two of these kits on ebay a few weeks (or months) ago. now i guess i know who got them hehe. anyway, in the 2nd and 3rd picture, the inside of the air intake looks "interesting". was that part of the kit (fibreglassed like that?)

Hi,
im almost done with the paint job.
The decals are from wim from bestbalsa, and they are really great.
First i thought they are crap, because the carrier foil was grey instead of clear. But after the first coats of clearcoat it all went good.
Puhh!

The only bad thing is,that my clarcoat makes the gold color a bit crisspy. But now im proud of this 3d effect.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6661373634323330.jpg
Next step will be the details on the dashboard. There are no instruments on the decalsheet,so i use the ones from an other lotus 72 decalsheet and print them on my homeprinter.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3563303137616237.jpg
I gave a big "thank you" the a german user at the"Wettringer Forum",
He made me an fantastic lotus identification plate.
It looks really awesome.
Thats all for now.
Bye
Christian
@sky1911:Thanks for your answer. The rivets where indeed not so correct like on the new computer cars.Between the races there are a lot of work for the mechanics, even when a car was not crashed.I dont think they give a hell for the right sizes of rivets. :icon16:
I bought these two kits at ebay us,in the middle of march this year.I dont know is these are the ones you were watching?

Hi,
its stopped because of this build here.

At moment all my time goes to the capri.
I didn´t have the nerves for the lotus.
Maybe when i finished the capri body parts?
But its good to see that the lotus is watching from someone!
Kind Regards

Ahhhh..... Thank you for that Christian.
Extra good luck with the Capri then. I shall be watching that too now.
I picked up a wrecked 72D 1/8 scale, and I'm going to try my best to rebuild it and detail it, but unfortunately I don't have the instructions.
I did find a pdf copy of them recently, but have since had a hard drive crash and lost the instructions and I can't find the site where I originally got them from. I've spent hours looking but have given up.
BTW, if anyone out there has a copy or a link to a copy, I'd be very grateful.
I do know someone that has it, but he's much too busy to bother..... :(
Anyway, great build, so far, and really looking forward to you getting around to the rest. (whenever)
Cheers lots to everybody,
'dad.

Hello,
after a long break some new shots from Emmo`s car.
My current project, the capri scratch is banned to my hobby room.Because there was a lot of sanding dust,my wife banned them from the livingroom.
Today i bought a convolut of 3 lotus cars,a 49 and a 72 in 1/12 scale.The third car was an edai grip lotus 72 in 1/8 scale.
This was the reason i remember this build.
So i pulled them back on the workbench and cleaned up the dust.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6264646662383333.jpg
The next step are the frontsuspension. There are a lot of broken little parts. So i must replace them with scratch made parts.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3565313033366131.jpg
My thoughts goes in an other direction than my last projects.
I dont want to take it to the edge with the detailjobs.I want to bring a car to the end and dont look at pics till there is no end.
There are so many cars i want to build,so i must be a little faster than i was this year.
Kind Regards
Christian

Hi,
some little progress with the lotus today.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3664643764363231.jpg
The frontsuspension is ready now. There are some major problems with all the rods and stuff at the front. The guy who sold me the kit put some rods with the wrong bars togehter. When he try to make it right,he destroyed some parts.
So i must scratch a lot of parts.
Its now ok,but not perfect. But i didnt want to spent more time with this stuff right now!
I glued the pedals and added some extra cables to the brakes and reservoirs.
Question?
Is it a fire extinguisher or a air surge tank at the front?I mean the red one.I´m not shure?
Meanwhile the engine is primed,a second time.

Hiho!
I got my wheels now at the right place.
The rims and tires are selfmade by resin. I got some trouble with the rims fastener, but now is everything ok.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3839306362656136.jpg
The steering wheel is in his place, needs only some wheatering more.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3435613838383566.jpg
The front side is ready.Fire extinguisher is in place, with cable and holders.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6463633362373638.jpg
Testfitting with the front hood. There is some place the hood dosent fit well.I need some rework to do.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3364306233356132.jpg
At least the engine.I tried to make some rough surface with microballs. Its not easy when you want to have it not overall.
I think i will give the tamiya diorame color with structure some change at the next time.Maybee its better to work with it than with microballs?
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3932666465653732.jpg
The engine still needs some other color, and some wheatering.
Thanks for looking!

Christian - the micro-balloons and weathering on the engine look good - how did you apply the micro-balloons?? did you hand paint with them or did you spray it through an airbrush? and what did you use to add the "oil" wash to the drive-train assembly? was it Tamiya weathering kit? - Thanks - John

Hi John,
i used the microballons in this way:
First i sprayed two layers of primer and let it dry for a day.
Than i sprayed again a thin layer of primer and put the microballons on it.I simpley fiiled it over and after it gets dry,i used a brush and brushed it away.
Than another layer of primer and than the color that i want.
Thats all.
You can can them slighty for a better effect before you use the color.
The drive-train was made with tamiya ts-75 champagne gold. After this was dry,i sprayed a thin layer ts-71 smoke over it.
Today i used a mix of the pigments i just bought. Some black and some oil-graese.
kind regards
Christian

Hi,
last evening i have tested the tamiya texture color......and i´m really impressed!
In my mind its much better than microballs for displaying textures of metal castings.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6164353734333261.jpg
Its easy to handle. The color dosent smell. You simple needs a brush, cut the hair a bit.The color is dry in about an hour and can be colored with every tamiya color you want.
http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3038353934353539.jpg
I also made some small scratchparts.
The small parts with the springs on both sides.
I think ist something like throttle linkage or something?
greetings
